1, 10 & 24! ✨

1 Favorite fictional characters this year Ooh okay rather than including characters who I want to asterisk as full of potential if they got more screen time or more episodes, I'll keep things truer to canon and focus only on 2025 shows: Carol and Manousos from Pluribus both got into my head in the best of ways (and Helen, short-lived as her actual during-canon life was, managed to feel so loved in that she's up there! Zosia is fascinating as part of a dynamic, but she's still so wrapped up in the plurality of the hive that I feel intellectually dishonest calling her an individual character!); Deborah and Ava continue to delight me on Hacks; and for as soapy as it was, boy am I delighted by Margo and Sophie on The Hunting Wives (and someone wrote a Callie pov character study fic that was sooo good and really brought her to the fore in new ways for me!).

10. Biggest fandom disappointment of the year Debating how controversial I wanna be lmaooo but I think to keep it...relatively mild, I was super bummed out by the ever-deeper toxicity of the aaa fandom, which kept me from sharing fics that I was otherwise so excited about writing for a show whose short duration left us with so much in terms of unexplored or only partially hinted at material that would have been really fun to play with in fic. I thought with time, things might mellow, but the writing I saw on the wall in the early days seems to have only come true and then some instead, and while I know you can carve out a bubble for yourself in fandoms, etc etc., I just....I played that game already in another big femslash fandom years ago, and it's the exact kind of thing that ruins fandom for me. I'd like my fandom angst-free (that should stay in the fic!)

24. Fandom resolutions for next year I have a couple fic ideas that I'd really love to manage to carve out time to write!! This year I think I let the idea that so many people won't read WIPs anymore mentally psych me out of starting to draft my longer fic ideas because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish them in any kind of prompt manner during the term, but I want to try to get over that and trust that people will be there!

GALLEN KALLELA - Au Musée Jacquemart André

A travers près de soixante-dix œuvres issues de collections publiques et privées, comptant notamment des prêts exceptionnels du Musée Gallen-Kallela d’Espoo, l’exposition investit un aspect dominant de l’œuvre du peintre finois: son rapport à la nature.  

Qu’elle soit naturante, c’est à dire cause, créatrice et donc dans un rapport mystique, ou naturée, c’est à dire dans sa phénoménalité d’effets qui s’enchainent et fonctionnent dans la beauté de leur apparition, la Nature finlandaise aussi sobre que majestueuse devient le porte parole de l’idée même de genèse, d’origine, et de source de vie. 

La peinture du Gallen Kallela est extrêmement maitrisée; des nuages se reflètent, tantôt mats tantôt brillants, selon que la glace a fondu ou laisse une fine trace sur l’eau. Une neige cotonneuse invente des formes nouvelles. Soudain, un arbre tranche l’horizontalité du paysage et vient souligner l’intense solitude qui règne dans cette contrée nordique. 

Gallen-Kallela représente la Finlande avec poésie et lyrisme, mélangés à un certain réalisme. Tournant le dos à la modernité urbaine, il a ancré son œuvre dans une nature sauvage suivant le déroulé des saisons en prenant pour motif les forêts, les innombrables lacs finlandais, les branches des arbres.

Ses paysages font résonner la métaphysique de la toute la puissance des éléments naturels habités de forces spirituelles, mythologiques et sacrées. Les visages de Dieu sont évoqués, le bien et le mal combattent dans la création d’un monde relativement peu habité. Les habitants du monde restent présents, mais ils font écho à la création et en témoignent, bien davantage que d’être présentés pour eux-mêmes. 

L’évolution de la créativité du maitre finois s’accompagne d’un changement de style qui tend du naturalisme au symbolisme. La construction de sa maison atelier Kallela en 1894, loin des villes et de la modernité, occupe une place centrale dans la définition tant artistique que conceptuelle du rôle de l’artiste dans la nature. 

Au sein de ce microcosme tourné tant vers l’extérieur que l’intérieur, Gallen-Kallela a tenté de concrétiser un idéal artistique qui reflète cette vision idéaliste du rapport à la Nature. Cet horizon s’exprime fortement dans son œuvre qui sans être majeure, reste très impressionnante.

2. Album of the year?

This is absolutely not a 2022 album, but Polo & Pan’s Caravelle took over my life this fall and is absolutely *my* album of the year. My brother had been really into Polo & Pan for a few years now, but I didn’t give them a shot until a random day in September and never looked back. He is annoyingly much cooler than me 😔

14. Favorite book you read this year?

This is where I admit that the combination of how much I read for my job and how much fanfic I read have caused me to become an extremely terrible book reader in the past few years. It would be a stretch to call any of the few things I read this year “favorites,” so I will mention my two fave fanfics of the year, by the same writer (but different fandoms) - @sapphicscholar’s ENGL:324 The Erotics of Hand Jokes for Ava/Deborah (Hacks), and Chosen for Blanche/Judith (Julia).

Also the best cookbook we cooked from this year: Carla Lalli Music’s That Sounds So Good.

20. What’s something you learned this year?

I was thinking of saying something I learned irl and something I learned in fandom, but realized I had something for both, which is that I am capable of more than I think. I changed jobs this year, and it was kind of a risk to go with my boss to start something new, but I trusted my gut and am pushing myself and growing in this new environment, and really love the work and people I work with/for. Really happy I took the risk and that I am trying to push myself to do the things that scare me the most in this job (in part, I don't really have a choice! but it's still scary and I am still doing it). And then for fandom, I made a whole new ship!! I mean, at the end of the day the people who made real content were the most important at getting this off the ground (@ensorcei and @naturaliseme my beloveds), but I think putting myself out there without a safety net (like there was for Hacks with a more-established fandom when I started making a bunch of silly Hannah thirst posts 😝) was a new experience, and one that ultimately made me so happy this year. So I guess I would say overall that 2022 brought me more confidence in various aspects of my life, and historically I'm not a super confident person!

La Curée, Émile Zola

Facilement le meilleur Zola parmi tous ceux que j'ai lus, et d'autant plus après le mélo casse-couilles entrecoupé de tableaux de gants de toilette et de visons d'Au bonheur des dames : ça ressemble plutôt au baroque vénéneux, parfois méta et limite fantastique de Nana ou — dans un autre genre et hors Rougon — de Thérèse Raquin. On n'est pas à l'abri non plus que Zola ait pressenti le féminisme, évidemment confiscatoire, esthétisé, utilisé en premier lieu pour faire pleurer le bon bourgeois avec du torture porn et des analogies bien réifiantes mais sensible en germe malgré tout, surtout vu les efforts de ses contemporains et de certains de ses successeurs. Assez rigolo, pour l'avoir relu avec un peu d'attention à cause des deux confinements successifs, de voir que la double appétence de Zola pour une littérature limite scientiste — je ne parle pas de l'hérédité et du milieu, plutôt de tout ce qui gravite conjoncturellement dans ses bouquins selon qu'ils appellent un domaine d'expertise spécifique ou pas : le socialisme et la théorie politique dans Germinal, la naissance de la grande distribution dans Au bonheur des dames, les intrigues de cour dans Son Excellence Eugène Rougon — et des inspirations plus fantastiques/décadentistes s'incarne de manière aussi segmentée dans des romans qui au final se ressemblent et/ou se superposent très peu. Si ce n'était pas la même famille et le même auteur, je ne suis même pas certain que je pourrais grouper plusieurs de ses livres entre eux hormis pour les quelques cousinages vraiment évidents — typiquement Nana et celui-ci.
