What’s this? A contorted hazelnut tree that’s blooming in my neighborhood. (Photos by my son.) Weird and wonderful, yes?
What in the world are these things? They’re the flowers of Petasites japonicus (aka butterbur, sweet colts-foot, bog rhubarb or fuki), an edible perennial that blooms each winter on my property before creating giant leaves. Weird and wonderful, yes?
Yes, this is a real plant. It’s Diphylleia grayi (aka skeleton flower), whose petals become translucent when it rains. Weird and wonderful, right?

These fuzzy reddish balls almost look like party decorations, don't they? Fact is, they're flowers. They come from a plant called Parkia biglobosa, also known as the African locust bean.
