Cost of a “complete” BJD

Someone confessed on a confession blog that newbies ought to know how much a bjd would cost in total, clothes and all. So today, I will give you an EXAMPLE.

We are going to buy an msd. I have decided on a Doll Leaves Pepper.

I am going to order her in normal skin, type 2 body, with small chest. I will order her with a default face-up. I will use Alice’s collections as my dealer. She will cost me 159 usd + 75 usd for the company face-up. 

We are currently on 214.92 usd. So far we have a nude doll with random acrylic eyes and a face-up.

Since I will be ordering her through acbjd, I might as well get her an outfit, wig, glass eyes and shoes. Let’s do some more shopping shall we?

This will be a nice wig for her. The price is 14 usd. To prevent the wig from slipping off, we also need a silicone wig cap. This is 5 usd. I have decided Pepper will be getting blue glass eyes in 12mm. This is 9.90 usd.

So far we have a nude doll, with face-up, glass eyes, random acrylic eyes, a wig and a silicone wig cap. Total cost: 243.82 usd.

She will be needing some clothes. This outfit is cute. It cost 28 usd and I will get a shirt, skirt and socks.

I found her some cute shoes to go with it too. We will be getting these in black. 

Lastly, Pepper will be needing some undies. These cost 3 usd.

So now we have msd girl, with face-up, glass eyes, random acrylic eyes, a wig, a silicone wig cap, an outfit, undies and shoes. Total costs: 293.82 usd

We are not there yet! Pepper and all her accessoires need to be shipped and I need to pay paypal fees. Shipping to my country is 30.24 usd and my paypal fees are 12.65 usd. My complete total is 336.71 usd. If customs get’s a hold on it, I will be paying more. Usually around 36 usd. Maximum costs: 372.71 usd.

Mind you, this is an EXAMPLE. You could get a LEGIT doll for cheaper. Heck, you can get Pepper for cheaper, due to the fact that DL has an event going on at this time. 

You could paint your doll yourself, or have it done by someone who charges less than 75 usd. You could make your own doll clothes or perhaps you don’t care about your doll wearing undies or having shoes. Pepper comes with random acrylic eyes, so you could have skipped buying the glass eyes.

So newbies, there you have it. A complete doll could cost you 336.71 usd. It could cost you more. It could cost you less. Depending on what you buy, where you buy, custom fees, shipping fees etc. 

But remember, buy legit. Support the artist!

How to make quick sales

So a while ago, I went through my BJD stuff and picked out stuff that I wasn’t using to put for sale. I posted in a few Facebook group and much to my surprise, I sold almost everything within a day. I was talking to one of the buyers about that and they said that it was normal since I had such good price and good pictures.  I thought that I should share with you how that process went so that you can help your sales too!  Organize everything  Once I knew what I wanted to sale, I made a list on Excel (in case on google Drive, but any table spread will do) and listed all the items I wanted to sale. In some cases, I also found a link to the original website so that people could have more info on the product, but that’s a bit of a stretch and can be time consuming. 

Prices  Setting your prices can be tricky. There are so many variable depending on what you are trying to sale. In my case, I wanted quick sales so I lowered my prices reasonably. The Licht wigs were 23$ when I bought them and even if they were practically new, I sold them 18$, so 5$ less. One trick can be to ask yourself how much you’d be willing to pay if you were looking to buy that item. 

Take pictures Taking good pictures can really help your sales. When browsing for stuff, buyers can find it off putting to see clothes in a pile on a bed, for example. 

You’ll need: 

A camera (I’ve used my DSLR but any camera will do!) 

White sheets of paper 

A space with good lighting

A photo-editing program (Optional) 

This was basically what the set up looked like when I took the pictures. This was a wide item so I had to use two sheets, but most other pictures were taken closer and I didn’t have to crop out the floor. I took pictures in front of a window on my living room floor, where I had good lighting during the day. Look around your house for where the lighting is the best, it helps a lot! 

It is time consuming to take picture of each items individually, but it makes everything cleaner. If you have small similar objects (like socks), you could take pictures of them together though. 

Photo-editing A quick editing can make a lot of difference to your pictures. The goal isn’t to alter the image of the object, but just to enhance the picture to make it more appealing. I used photoshop, but a quick googling can help you find free website where you can do basic editing.( Here’s one ) What I mainly did was to crop any unneeded space and brighten the picture. This is the same sweater as above after it was edited. Nothing too drastic but it does make it more eye-catching, no? 

Last Note:  Understand that not everything is meant to be sold. Just because you’ve used it doesn’t mean another person will want it.  I hope this can help you improve your secondhand sales!

Re FAQ: Maybe you should add that "our" 1/6 is different to the one of other figures? I had a hard time explaining someone that our 1/6 usually means chibi-sized toddlers and not like, with actionfigures for example, a slim and normally proportioned adult and that they cannot exchange clothes. Oh, yes! I definitely should. I can't believe I didn't think of that considering I'm in the figure hobby as well, ha!

And that was an excellent guide! Actually I might not even need to make one now that I have something like that to refer to. Or if I did/do, I'm no longer pressed for time, but that pretty much covered everything I was going to and more.
