Bjossa was the first orca I ever saw in person at Vancouver Aquarium. It was shortly before she was moved to SeaWorld, so I must have been 5 or 6 years old. I loved her so much. Every orca toy I got was christened “Bjossa.”

When it was on the news that she was being moved to SeaWorld, I cried inconsolably. That was MY whale! Why were they taking her away?!

When I opened this model I got teary eyed. Now she really is my whale, in a way. Thank you so much @orca--friend. Go commission her!!

Hey all, contemplating making a mini print pack which would include all of these digital orca paintings, each a 4X6 print. If I were to do that I would sell it for 20 CAD + shipping (Mini prints I usually sell for 5 each online, so this is essentially a half off deal!) and I’m wondering if there’s any interest in such a set?

Alternatively, I’m thinking about selling these in “surprise” packs of each containing three different prints, which I would sell for around 8 CAD

Posting this mostly to pan interest

December 20th

52 years ago today, in 1965, Ted Griffin sold Shamu to SeaWorld for $75 000, and she became SeaWorld's first killer whale.

37 years ago in 1980, the whales caught with Ulises - Bjossa, Finna and Vigga - were sent to Vancouver Aquarium, where they met Hyak 2, who had been alone for a couple of months after the death of Skana.

And finally five years ago in 2012, Oscar, the father of Earth and Luna, died at Kamogawa Sea World from unknown causes at the age of 28.

October 8th

Today it is 16 years since the death of Bjossa. She had only spent half a year at SeaWorld San Diego, where she had reunited with Ulises who she hadn’t seen since Iceland, and finally became a “mother” to Sumar.

However, she had already been sick for a long time, and on this day, she died in the animal hospital part of the park from her chronic broncho-pneumonia, at the age of 24.

November 14th

In 1980, two whales were caught on this day. It is unsure exactly which two, as databases said four whales total were caught on the 7th and 14th combined, but looking at the Icelandic newspaper at the time, it says “first whale on Oct 24 (that was Benkei 2), second whale on Nov 2nd, third on Nov 10, and the fourth and fifth whales on Nov 14″.

The four whales in November were Ulises, Bjossa, Finna and Vigga, but it’s unknown in what order. All were from the same location.

And in 1983, Nandu (pictured) and Samoa were caught and joined Tilikum who had already been at the aquarium for five days.
