Bjossa and her calf, K'Yosha
Gender: Female Pod: N/A Place of Capture: Captive born Date of Capture: Born September 30, 1991 Age at Capture: Captive born
On September 30, 1991, Icelandic female Bjossa gave birth to her second calf at the Vancouver Aquarium, a female later known as K’yosha. Bjossa was a good mother, but was unable to produce enough milk for her calf.
K’yosha was separated from Bjossa and moved to a separate tank with a Pacific White-Sided Dolphin named Whitewings; K’yosha was tube-fed multiple times a day by staff. She seemed to be doing well and steadily gained weight.
Unfortunately, K’yosha died suddenly on January 4, 1992 due to a Brain Infection at only 3 months old.

Mom and Me
Orcas: Bjossa and her daughter K'yosha
I love Bjossa so so much, an K'yosha was such a little darling, shame she didn't live long :[ Bjossa was born in Iceland, and was captured and sold to the Vancouver Aquarium. While there, she lived with Hyak 2 and Finna. K'yosha's father was Hyak 2, but he died before she was born. K'Yosha only lived for a couple of months before she died of malnutrition, and lived longer than any of Bjossa's other calves. Bjossa id not produce enough milk to feed her calves, resulting in the Vancouver Aquarium trying to hand rear K'yosha but it sadly did not keep her alive. She was an Icelandic/Southern Resident hybrid. Bjossa had one more calf after K'yosha with Finna, that died literally seconds after it's birth and never even took it's first breath. When Finna passe away, Bjossa was left alone until she was eventually transferred to Seaworld San Diego, where she grew close to Corky, and Sumar. Her and Corky acted as Sumar's mother. After a few months at Seaworld, Bjossa's respiratory disease [one of the reasons she was transferred to Seaworld] took a turn for the worst, and she passed away at the age of about 24.
RIP darlings!
Also my scanner has an ugly streak running through Bjossa, it's not actually on the painting though!
Rest in Peace
