NU-METAL MONDAY
Better Know a Nu
Slaves on Dope
Slaves on Dope, aside from having tha best band name ever, was tha first and only singing to Ozzy Osbourne's label Divine Records and with that came lots of hype on tha Ozzfest tour in '01. Their first album "Inches From the Mainline" was fairly slammin' but didn't really resonate at tha time for them. Things didn't really help when their label dissolved and half tha band left to start Anew Revolution with tha vocalist for Unloco (probably a future BKaN) but they are BACK in 2011 with a new album and I'd be lyin' if I told you I didn't think this shit was ill. 'Cause I think it's ill. So to say I don't think what I do think would be contradictory to tha truth. Ya follerin' me? TROUNCE.
NU-METAL MONDAY
Darwin's Waiting Room
This week's BKaN (Better Know a Nu) is Darwin's Waiting Room from Miami. DWR's schtick was that they had 2 vocalists, and one of 'em was kinda black. He obvi was tha rappper or "emcee" while tha nerdy white dude was Chester Bennington-ing it out over on tha clean vocals. Tha maybe black dude also did all tha screams and such and was featured on more well-know nu NONPOINT's first album on tha track "Tribute." Eddie "Tha Kidd" their guitarist would later play in Cold and their bassist had a short stint with Five Bolt Main who was a nu-metal-has-been supergroup that used to play tha Music Farm in Charleston, SC all tha time. DWR only released one album like most of tha greats called "Orphan" and it was pretty fucking sick. They usually got alot of comparisons to Linkin Park because of tha 2-vocal thing but really they were alot more aggressive and "raw" than LP due to tha lack of electronics and such. Tha Japanese version of Orphan also had a SLAMMIN' cover of Juvenile's "Back That Ass Up" before tha whole 'we're a rock band but we ironically cover rap songs' thing was played out but most notably Orphan featured a random weird as fuck guest appearence by Shaggy...as in "It Wasn't Me" Shaggy. As in Mr. Bombastic Shaggy. But he wasn't on this song. Here was tha "hit" Feels So Stupid. TROUNCE.
Stereomud
NU-METAL MONDAY...Better Know a Nu Part 3.
Recently tha band Life of Agony has gotten a lot of attention due to their vocalist having an identity crisis between boy and girl. I CAN RELATE AMIRITE?! But it reminded me of when I was a youth and toured with this sick band Stereomud whose guitarist Joey Z (how nu-metal is that?) and drummer were in LOA. Their nu royalty doesn't stop there however as their other guitarist Corey Lowery was little brother of SEVENDUST guitarist Clint Lowery AND their vocalist Erik Rogers would later go on to front Love Said No who featured nu-metal icon Bobby Burns of Primer 55/Soulfly fame. So diagram all those 7 ways to Kevin Bacons I just did for ya. They put out 2 albums, the 2nd one of which sucked but tha first one RULED and had some sweet singles my favorites of which were "Stepping Away" and "Closer Now" but tha only one that had a video was "Pain". So if you like forrest mosh pits, get into this one.
LIFER
It's Nu-Metal Monday! Know what that means?...The 2nd part of my 667 part series BETTER KNOW A NU. Today? Lifer! Lifer started off as a band called Strangers With Candy (tie-ing in with my Stephen Colbert 7") and got signed on MTV for winning a cover-band contest! Lifer of course would tank but half of tha band would go on to form Breaking Benjamin who are tearin' it up on your local rape-rock station! Meanwhile, tha other half would go on to do what most failed musicians do: work at a local tattoo and piercing shop.
AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE
So this is tha first installment in my 667 part series Better Know a Nu! Today's nu-metal band: American Head Charge. This band put out 2 albums, 3 if you count their independent effort "Trepanation" but only one of them mattered: Tha War of Art. It was a bit lengthy but pretty groundbreaking in intensity and at its very worst, it was extremely unique. I remember seeing this band open for Coal Chamber on their Dark Days Tour and just being blown away by tha intensity. I would have seen them on tour with Mudvayne in North Charleston but...tha day of tha show their guitarist Bryan died. They broke up soon after that because their vocalist is a fucking lunatic. Anyway, enjoy this single off of Tha Wart of Art "Just So You Know."
