Okay so I was watching this PBS video about the history and evolution of blood in animals and it had my brain GOING -

Of course considering the nature of the information given, someone pls fact check me if I'm wrong,,, I know we got some scholars on this hellsite.

So in terms of blood u got:

Animals with hemoglobin (oxygen binds(?) to iron) which is red.

Animals with hemocyanin (oxygen binds(?) to copper) which is blue

Animals with hemerythrin (oxygen binds(?) to iron) which doesn't have the same "donut" shaped heme (protein) as hemoglobin and hemocyanin, so it turns purple when oxidated.

Hemoglobin and Hemocyanin are the most common found in animals today. Hemerythrin is found in animals like Marine Worms and Brachiopods, and is a very simple (less efficient) method of oxygen transport/use.

They also talked about *white* blood in Ice Fish, since it's so cold where they live that having blood cells would clog up their systems.

So they just,,, don't.

And to the source of my excitement: *green blood*

It's found in some lizards; they have a green pigment in their blood called biliverdin, which is made when hemoglobin is broken down.

Even more impressive? They think it can make its bearers *more resistant to diseases.*
