Abs of Steel, Squirrel Style
Check out this little stinker emptying my bird feeder. She managed to get past the two milk bottles meant to deter the squirrels from sliding down the wire and raiding the feeder at will. Now she’s doing full hanging sit ups while chowing down. How do they do stuff like this? :D
And no, you are not seeing things. She is an Eastern Gray Squirrel, but her coat is black. The dark fur is caused by a mutation in the genes for coat color which is fairly common in this area of New Jersey. About 40-50% of the squirrels in my immediate neighborhood are black.

Got More Interesting Wildlife to Show
Let me preface this by saying I am not a particularly big fan of snakes. I suppose I’ve gotten used to them as I have gotten older, but I still don’t like them. With all of that said, look at this guy. He is an Eastern Milk Snake, according to Google, but we all know how trustworthy Google is. His tail was rattling or maybe it was twitching, like a rattlesnake, and he was not happy. He slithered…
Squirrels, Salvage and Pawnee City NE
What do squirrels, a salvage yard and Pawnee City, Nebraska have in common? I experienced all three in one recent trip. The story begins with my husband Keith. He was perusing YouTube videos of salvage yards, looking for a rear door for his 1938 Chevy panel van. When he saw one on a video at Watts Salvage Yard in the town of Wymore, Nebraska. He said, “Can we go?” I said, “Why not?” Marysville…
Seeing you is a rarity
But always brings such clarity!
This is Rodin, sitting on our fence. Rodin is one of the three black squirrels that are living somewhere in our yard, and sleeping and hiding somewhere in one of the 40+ trees on or adjacent to our yard. He takes peanuts in the shell directly from my hand, and stares in the windows until one of us does that. I named him Rodin, because he will sit motionless for long periods of time, just like Rodin's sculpture, The Thinker, while his siblings are running around like typical crazy squirrels. Black squirrels are just grey squirrels with a genetic abnormality that gives them black fur. I realize I'm being "anthropomorphic" by giving him a name, but so what. He's a squirrel, and doesn't know he has a name. And, he might be a she.
