Hello? Was I the only one dumb enough to NOT know Black Sails was a Treasure Island prequel ??????
I mean, I went into BS just from the title, because I knew it was for me anyway - for the period costume porn and the sea porn if nothing else. I had seen the title on our provider 2 years ago, but the first seasons were not available and I wasn’t about to get in the middle of something I wanted to watch without having seen the beginning, and I just waited for it to be available from the start, and I meant to stay unspoiled until then. Then we (finally) took Netflix and IT WAS THERE! So I went into it happily blind and intended to stay blind (because let’s be honest it’s so rare nowadays to get into anything unspoiled) Anyway, I LOVED IT, and it was HARD, OH SO HARD, to stay out of the web (not only tumblr, EVERYTHING - i forbade myself to go even only on the official website or to look for a wallpaper screen before finishing it, that’s how commited i was to enjoy the ride unspoiled).
And. I DID read Treasure Island as a child (who hasn’t I guess?) but the truth is: I didn’t like it. It was way too violent and way too morally gray for my child’s tastes I think ? (to simplify : take everything ranging from Goldorak to The Little Princess (there MUST be people around here from my generation, lol) it’s still obvious who is good and who is bad and who you root for and who wins in the end. And no child actually kills anyone, even in self defence.) Anyway, the book didn’t really let an imprint on my mind more than ‘that book I hoped so much from (I mean, pirates! adventures!) and disliked’.
So. Imagine me. Watching Black Sails, and between names as Rackam and Bonny and Vane and Blackbeard, well, I’m ashamed but it’s a fact, I took the rest for original characters and James Flint, Billy Bones and John Silver never ringed a bell.
Then comes 2.10. And as Silver is about to lose his leg IT CLICKED. And I was like, huh, wait, isn’t the name of the one-legged pirate in Treasure Island John Silver too??? I FELT SO DUMB.
And then a few eps later (I binge watched the serie. I just couldn’t STOP. I felt like it should be savored but HELL I JUST COULDN’T STOP. I would savore the rewacthes :)) arrives BEN GUNN (yep, it turns out the only name that had actually sticked in my mind was cheese related - I’m French, does it explain the silliness?? (it’s more plausible I know that the gears in my head having made the first connexion recognised the others names directly, but I made myself snort when I had the thought and decided to share...) and I was like ‘NOOOOOOO, it IS Treasure Island related’ AND THE ONLY THING I FELT WAS DOOMED AND DEVASTATED - because I LOVED Black Sails THAT MUCH already by then and HOW THE HELL was I supposed to ever be able to connect it with a story I disliked to start with ??????
But, to come back to my original curiosity : anyone can relate or I am alone in my dumbiness???
