DIVERS III, oil and acrylic on canvas, 36"x48", 2021 (currently on view @maddoxgallery Los Angeles) I can still remember how I felt the when I saw "The Fall Of The Damned" by Reubens at the library in the @ednamanleycollege . I remember feeling dazed and my eye felt like they weren't working right. My initial impression was that this was an abstract painting. But I knew that that could not be possible. Abstraction in painting happened formally with the advent of Cubism in 1908, But this painting was done in 1620! Needless to say that image has left a mark on me to this day. In Dives III I was trying to imagine the rise and fall ones life. Can a setback or struggle provide inspiration for success. Is falling necessary to succeed. Can the life of a young boy playing in the ghettos of Jamaica change drastically? Yes maybe, but what if it doesn't, is it still a life worth living? Have the memory of "The Fall of the Damned" helped to anchor my thoughts as I pondered and tried to express these things in my own voice.
