My father is known for pitching a No No on LSD & taking the Pirates to the world series. He was, in the immortal words of Pulp Fiction’s Jules Winnfield, “a mushroom-cloud-layin’ motherf—ker.” His style was pure Youngblood Priest, a mélange of gold rings, colorful polyester suits, & hair-curlers, cruising in the front seat of a big, shiny Cadillac with a vanity plate that said, “DOCK.” His attitude was bold, intimidating batters with his menacing glare & violent gum chewing, & planting verbal dynamite in the belly of institutional racism. He had a career record of 138-119. He was an All-Star in 1971, & helped lead the Pirates to a World Series championship that year. He’d later compile a 17-8 record while pitching for the American League champion New York Yankees in 1976.These are the many things that you will hear ppl say about my father which indeed is the truth. However there was more 2 this man then flash, money and being loud. He was a recovering addict for over 28 years in 1980 my father checked into rehab & turned his back on the only life he knew. He used the tools and knowledge he was blessed with to give back to At-Risk youth and inmates. Dock gave the last 30 years to speaking to addicts, inmates and children. His heart yearned for change together we worked for a juvenile detention center. In 2007 my father was diagnosed with liver disease, even in the mist of knowing tomorrow was not promised my father still made the time to reach out to inmates he had built bonds with. He continued to make phones calls and check on children who were once boys and now young men. My mission is to start a non-profit.
