CASEL Equity Work Group Day 2

Today was filled with many powerful connections, discussions and wonderments. Here are a few selected highlights/takeaways:

• Previous life experiences filter how one understands safety

• The brain is/becomes good at what it does a lot

• How you explain the situation will determine your response – ask a question (listen & learn) before you try to fix

• To be culturally competent one must gain knowledge, develop skills, and practice self-aware

• To promote student voice => “In school field trip” - Students participate with teachers in professional development and/or students ask questions of teachers regarding pedagogy, expectations and perceptions.

• “Reframe” trauma as “struggle and triumph”

This should be the policy for every public school ... Since the children are “our future”, imagine the return on investment.  #ItJustMakesSense

A follow up to the West Side Leader headline ... See Clarification.  This small insignificant “clarification” is what West Side Leader offers as a retraction. Is not on the education page nor was there anything on education page to refer to readers to the clarification. “Many” had suggested that West Side Leader should not only reprint the article with the corrected headline but also discuss the implications of using the black athlete trope and how it diminishes the black intellectual Image, perpetuate negative stereotypes about black intelligence and supports white supremacy. Based upon what was printed, it would seem that an in-depth and nuanced reflection is beyond the editor’s capability or willingness. As the proverb states, “As long as the hunter tells the story; the lion will never be the hero.”

Notice the headline for Buchtel as compared to the other schools ... Westside Leader using the prevailing narrative (implicit or explicit bias) to perpetuate stereotypes and reinforce white supremacy. Even the featured picture shows the top 10 academic students and the article points out that 46 students (12 of which were athletic) receive scholarships totaling $850,000, The headline would suggest Buchtel graduates received athletic scholarships... Supporting the stereotypes of the black savage/brute, black athlete trope, athletics is “our” way out, and diminishes/belittles Black intellect (to name a few). We must call out these microaggressions and/or blatant explicit tropes that reinforce the false narrative of white supremacy and black inferiority.

Using an African-centered philosophical worldview and a racial socialization framework, this seminar will critically examine the social and emotional effects of racism on the academic, occupational, cultural and relational well being of African-American males.
