(Unofficial) Favorites // Bellatrix and Walburga

Kreacher opened the door, ushering in a mass of wild black hair that Walburga’s niece had at least attempted to contain in an updo.  The dress was not as ornate as it could be, and wisps of hair betrayed imperfection that should not exist, but it was nice to see Bellatrix trying.  She would never be the perfect visage of beauty that her sister was, that had always been clear.  There was something about strength of character that seemed to intimidate men into thinking they weren’t as attractive as, say, Druella or Narcissa, who reeked of needing protection.  

That was one of the many things Walburga saw of herself in Bellatrix.  While Walburga had confidence in the security of the Black family name in her own son, she knew that she would not live forever.  When Walburga was gone, someone needed to continue as the protecting matriarch of the family, and Bellatrix had always seemed the best option of all the Black children.  

“Kreacher, please bring us the scones you prepared earlier as well as the teapot.  And bring the good cups this time.  We always use the good cups for family.”  She looked down at him as he tottered off to the kitchen, gesturing for Bellatrix to follow her into the sitting room.  “I apologize for the mess of furniture.  I’m ordering new uphoustry and it hasn’t come in yet.”  The couch and chairs were mis-matched, half still in the soft brown leather Walburga had bought just after his seventh birthday.  Walburga sat in one of the old armchairs, allowing Bellatrix to try the dragon-hide couch, a dark emerald color with charms and enchantments to enhance comfort.  

“I appreciate you taking time to have tea with me.  The house can be dreadfully boring with Orion and Regulus off doing who knows what.” She waved in the air dismissively.  “I know it must have been difficult for you to take time out of your... duties.”  Walburga attempted to supress the sneer on her face but failed to disguise the derision in her voice.  Proper young ladies did not duel in the midst of battle.  That was the one issue with young Bella: she insisted on being a warrior instead of a true side-line manipulator.
