Lemme travel down memory lane for a min…
The first time that I had ever heard of Aaliyah, was when her song “Back & forth” was on the radio. I was 7 years old and thought that she was a grown woman 😄. I had no idea that she was only 15 years old. Up until I was 10, I had only heard her songs on the radio, so I had no idea what she looked like. The first music video that I had seen featuring her was “Up jumps da boogie.” I LOVED her style in that video. My 10 year old self could not wait until I was grown so that I could dress like that😍😄. A beautiful girl that was skinny and comfortable in her own skin❤️👏🏾. That moment made me a huge fan of hers. I looked forward to watching BET’s Planet Groove, Jam zone, etc specifically for her videos or videos that featured her with Timbaland, Magoo, Missy, and Ginuwine 😍.
I was so happy in 2001 when she announced that she was coming out with a new album after 5 years. Especially because she just did her movie “Romeo Must die” the year prior along with releasing a few singles from the soundtrack. She was on 🔥🤩. She released the single “We need a resolution” and then I remember her saying in an interview that the next single would be “More than a woman” and she was about to shoot the music video for it 🤔. I was 14 years old and couldn’t wait for her to go on tour so that I could go to one of her concerts. I really wanted to meet her 😌. Unfortunately that summer ended in a way that I never saw coming…
I was getting ready for Sunday school when my dad called me asking had I watched the news. I told him no, and that’s when he told me that Aaliyah died in a plane crash. I couldn’t believe it 😕. Within the next hour several of my friends were calling to tell me as well. Anyone that was close to me knew that I was a HUGE fan of hers. I wanted to be just like her so much when I was a kid.
Over the years, I have learned so much more about her than what I could see on tv back then. Example: She was supposed to release a clothing line called “Dolly Pop” with her best friend Kidada Jones, she was supposed to star in the movie Honey, etc. There was just so much that she had to do and her life was cut short due to someone’s recklessness. Or a “Spiritual murder” as Mary J Blige referred to it 🤔. Side note: I was very puzzled by that statement when I was 14, but I believe that I understand it now🧐.
Despite all of the controversies that have been surrounding her name recently, after 20 years, it is a very beautiful thing to see just how much of an impact that she had/ still has and with the newer generation. R. I.P. Baby Girl. Your iconic art is truly missed.🕊💖
