Aaliyah’s self-title album (more popularly known in the fanbase as the ‘Red Album’) is officially released by Blackground Records in JAPAN (7/7/01). This is the official release date for the album, however, July 17th, 2001, is the more global and universal acknowledged celebration day within the fanbase.

It could be because Japan doesn’t really share much of their media (video and photography) content whereas the United States content is more easily accessible, and she also had MTV following her for their Diaries special.

Where were you when this album dropped? Did you go out and purchase the album, was it given to you as a gift, did you have the privilege of meeting Aaliyah for an autograph?

#OnThisDay March 9th 2001 Aaliyah records her last song for her last album.

Per March 14, 2001 MTV article: The singer, who finished recording the last song for the album Friday night, said she will shoot a dance-oriented video for "Loose Rap."

Do you think "Loose Rap" should have been her first 'come back' single?
