Our Lady of the Refugees

“A friend on Instagram noticed this painting in a photo of my office, and asked about it. It was given to me by Didace Kamagunga, a friendly and gentle Rwandese refugee whom we supported at the Jesuit Refugee Service in Nairobi, Kenya. In Nairobi, JRS sponsors income-generating projects that help refugees support themselves and their families. Didace's own work was as an artist, and we sold many of his beautiful paintings in the Mikono Centre, our shop for refugee handicrafts (which is still in business.) Didace gave me this as a gift at the end of my time in Nairobi in April 1994, a few weeks before the Rwandese genocide began. Over the years, I've lost touch with Didace. Perhaps someone knows where he is. I've come to think of this painting as Our Lady of the Refugees.”
