Leonidas Harris Berry (July 20, 1902 – December 4, 1995) was an African American & pioneer in gastroscopy & endoscopy. He served as the president of the National Medical Association from 1965-1966. After graduating from Wilberforce University (1924), moved to Chicago where he received a 2nd B.S. degree from the University of Chicago, followed by a M.D. degree from the Rush Medical College of the University. Also received a M.S. degree in Pathology from the University of Illinois Medical School (1933). Awards: Rudolph Schindler Award 1977 from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Distinguished Service Award from the National Medical Association. 1st Annual Clinical Achievement Award from the American College of Gastroenterology. Freedom Award for Public Service from the Chicago Chapter of the NAACP. She began writing science fiction as a teenager, and later, she met writer Samuel R. Delany at the Clarion Science Fiction Workshop in Pennsylvania. Butler's Patternist Series, featuring Mind of my Mind, launched her into literary stardom in the late 70's. Her work has won her multiple awards such as the Nebula Award for best novel, Hugo Award for best short story, a MacArthur Genius grant, and numerous Best Seller lists to name a few.
