“ Content Warning: Violence/ Murder - - Environmental Justice seeks to provide equal environmental health across all environments, where communities have a healthy place to live, learn, and work. Black / Brown people have faced the most environmental discrimination when looking at history. Racism and prejudice amongst marginalized groups have been apparent, and when we talk about the environment, we must realize that police violence is connected to environmental justice. Long-term high exposure levels to air, water, or soil quality increases the slow violence or death of an individual and making them extremely vulnerable (City Lab). These negative environmental health factors inflict the bodies of Black communities, and it contributes to their death when faced with police terrorism. Black people don't have the chance to breathe in their community because of white supremacy; police brutality has murdered innocent and sacred members of their communities, and many of their last words are "I Can't Breathe." How can we think about a sustainable future of innovations when Black communities CAN'T BREATHE. We must tell ourselves that Police Brutality is connected to environmental injustice. - - When talking about placement, we need to think where communities are designated by race, class, and status. From there, we need to ask ourselves, how policies are different from specific environments, and the increase of "surveillance and divestment" is apparent in neighborhoods of color (Williams 2018). The Bronx Climate Justice North group says that "without a focus on correct injustice, work on climate change addresses only symptoms and not root causes." In order to protect the planet, we must not only rely on the climate justice framework but on allyship and how we can address the "economic, social, and racial injustice that is happening." I've gotten a lot of new members in my community and just want to remind you that when we choose to ignore how issues are interconnected, that means you choose the oppressor's side.
