“Corvids are known for caching food and other items to save for later. Our keepers gave two lucky birds this rubber duck last year as an enrichment item and they loved it! Each time a keeper entered the exhibit, the birds would re-hide the duck in a new spot! Generally our bird care staff will rotate enrichment so the items don’t lose their novelty, but the jays were so intrigued that our keepers let them hang on to it for a while. We love to share how fun items like rubber ducks can give our birds opportunities to demonstrate their natural behaviors! This is a black-throated magpie jay!”
