Carrie Mae Weems

Carrie Mae Weems was born on April 20, 1953 in Portland, Oregon. Starting out with not only a love for photography, she also had a high interest in text, fabric, audio and videography, motivating her to learn more about the arts at different universities, like receiving her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in ‘81 and studying folklore at the University of California from 1984-1987. During this time, she created her first series “Family Pictures and Stories”. Her focus in her artwork was race, power, and relationships and her most famous series “Kitchen Table” in 1990 dug deep in the 3 topics displaying the relationship of a black woman with her husband and son. With this, it showed that she wanted to confront the issues as well as bring it to people’s attention using one of the things she’s knowledgeable of: photography.
