Townsend is best known for directing the films Hollywood Shuffle, Eddie Murphy Raw, The Meteor Man, #BAPS and various other films and stand-up specials. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Especially his self-titled character as the starring role as Robert Peterson on The WB @TheCW sitcom “The Parent 'Hood” (1995–1999), in which he created the series, as well as directing episodes and Donald "Duck" Matthews in 1991's #TheFiveHeartbeats. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Townsend is also known for his production company Townsend Entertainment which has produced films Playin' for Love, In the Hive and Playin’ for Love where you can watch on @Hulu . ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Townsend's career includes stand-up comedy routines that appeared on cable television. During the 1980s and early–1990s, Townsend gained national exposure through his many appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. I remember watching a lot of the films, writers, directors and actors talked about this series when I was younger wanting to work in the film industry to make an impact on the world the way they’ve made on my life. This show has hit an emotion in me that I haven’t felt in years. #Repost @blackcinemanow • • • • • • I️ was privy to an early screening of an amazing docuseries 'They Gotta Have Us' directed & written by Simon Frederick(@simonfrederick), and what an eye-opening experience it was. First off the docuseries featured all-star commentary, from the late and legendary Diahann Carroll & John Singleton to living legend Harry Belafonte, Spike Lee, John Boyega, Lawrence Fishburn, Brian J. White, Lil Rel Howery, David Oyelowo, Barry Jenkins, Whoopi Goldberg, and the list goes on. Ironically, the series really educated me on the term “Black Cinema” and how the world views black actors/directors/writers then & now. It spoke to me especially the parts talking about the groundbreaking firsts that actors like Belafonte, Poitier & Carroll achieved, paving the way for those today. It also touched on the internal prejudices black actors from other countries face in and out our community. The series brought up actors here in the US that fought and still are fighting for roles that don’t stereotype black people. Some stereotypes though helped and hurt actors in the industry, remember the blaxploitation era or the string of “Hood Movies” of the early 90s? It was amazing to see how movies influenced other directors to create some of the movies we love and watch today. If you enjoy learning about the impact we’ve made in the film industry this is definitely a must-watch. Thank you again to Ava Duvernay’s @arraynow for the pre-screening.
