being personable never felt taxing for tidus. he wasn’t giving something away that couldn’t be replenished. if anything, offering his kindness was a brand of therapy that no other experience could match.

squall almost always had a different take on things in comparison to tidus. they were on two entirely opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to their likes and dislikes, what they considered their strengths and weaknesses; the list went on and on.

despite all those contrasts, the factors that mattered most were shared between the two. friendship and devotion rested at the top of tidus’ list, and even if squall wasn’t quite as vocal on the subject, it was clear that the same could be said for him.

it was why being nice, especially to squall, always felt like receiving a gift as opposed to giving one. being important to him felt like the rarest of all honors. how many people could say that squall would protect them without question? so few would ever know the immensity of that comfort. he could safely and without a second thought place his life in squall’s hands, knowing it would be secure.

after a moment or two of mulling it over, tidus surrendered with a small shrug. “i guess it’s easy to be nice when you’ve got reasons to be. people who make you happy enough to share it with others. people like you.”

tidus let a small silence hang in the air before he grinned at squall. his specialty was being cheesy and squall made it abundantly clear how irritating he found it. tidus relished in every opportunity to be a nuisance — an unabashedly sincere one, though. shifting in his spot, tidus nudged his shoulder against squall’s softly.

“i’ll spare you all the sentimental mushy stuff, but i mean it. so if you ever need some extra “nice,” just hit me up. i’m more than happy to share the wealth.”
