You have to read between the lines a bit, but it’s not a stretch at all to consider that Cyrus was an abuse victim. I think the book is a little more clear on it being his parents specifically rejecting him, but it’s basically the withholding of emotional attachment and comfort due to not meeting likely unrealistic expectations for performance. Which is, in fact, a type of abuse.
