When a given action generates enough bad press, money starts to flow out of the system. When enough money flows out of the system, the corporate entity cannot ignore it (not without risking going bankrupt at least).
In this case, the creators (a group of people who are, by their nature, each able to speak to a larger community) pointing out the horrible maths involved with the numbers and the consequent spread of bad press, plus the resulting flood of patrons dropping their pledges either directly in protest or because they wouldn’t be able to afford it any more, meant that Patreon was looking at substantial losses from an action they were hoping would sure up their economic foundation.
The people do have a voice, it just has to be loud enough.
