The Tamarind Seed (1974) should be essential viewing for John LeCarre fans. It deals with a Cambridge-educated, queer, Kim Philby-esque mole in the secret service, there is a plot point around an engraved lighter in a loveless marriage, there is a tense scene where someone steals a document out from under the nose of their boss by putting it under their jacket, and I feel like Jack Loder's pipe smoking and broad regional accent is a model for Percy Alliline....
