I have been bitter about it ever since a) I learnt at like, age 10, that they have monopolized the use of the term and that for any person learning English as an ESL or EFL THAT’S what they learn; b) every fucking gringx I have ever encountered in rl has the NERVE to correct me whenever I say I am American too, with that boastful condescending tone all Gringxs use whenever talking down on Latin Americans.

Also, imagine what it does to a child to learn THAT SHIT!!! I will never reffer to a so called American by American, or if I do I will in the context that we are all Americans (yes, even Canadians)
