The “write what you know” Maxim is a bullshit excuse to not writing marginalized characters because “what you know” isn’t a static concept. Knowledge isn’t a static concept.

Good writers research. That’s what “write what you know” means. If you want to write it, learn about it. That’s why there are entire Tumblrs dedicated to amassing historical accounts of Brooklyn during the Great Depression so that Bucky and Steve can bang with complete historical accuracy, because if we all wrote what we knew, fiction as a concept wouldn’t exist.

So really, if you don’t write people of color in your fiction, it’s not because you don’t know, it’s because you don’t want to.

Friend -- we are discussing the racism Diego Luna (and, to reiterate, people who look and sound like him, and don’t have the benefit of being a famous actor) faces in the United States, as a result of his heritage. 

Why are we discussing that, and not his experience in Mexico/Latin America generally? because, hon, your original post was about Rogue One, a film made by an American film studio, to be released, first and foremost, to American audiences:

Rogue One still has two white leads is the statement you made -- we are all, here, at the present time, responding to what a bullshit argument that is. And because you made such a bullshit argument about racial perception in a country you apparently don’t even live in (“lmao y'all are talking to a mixed, white passing latina living in Latin America”), your broader point of ‘hey where are all the darker skinned Latinxs in Hollywood? like, shouldn’t they be represented to an equal and in some cases greater degree than the pale-skinned, European-featured ones?’, which is valid and justified, was totally lost. 

Like, maybe, just maybe -- stay in your fucking lane on this. 

And if you want to talk about racism vs xenophobia? Look at how many times in the press tour Diego (a foreigner) was pelted with ‘lol Donald Trump’ questions, while Mads and Ben (both foreigners) had a tidy little giggle about Krennic’s cape. Talk about Mads Mikkelsen going ‘man why are scandinavians the go to villain these days in american films :(’ while Riz Ahmed is out there doing phenomenal acting in role after role, trying to confront and counter anti-Pakistani/anti-Muslim prejudices with his work, but whose (crucial!!!!) role in Rogue One is completely ignored by its marketing, and was met by jokes of ‘lol is he going to blow himself up for the cause’ by twitter. Who, by the way, still gets called ‘middle eastern’ by the progressive side of fandom (as in, ‘oh what good MENA representation’) when he is, in fact, Asian. To say nothing of the way fandom ignores, minimizes, or demonizes him as a whole. 

Like xenophobia in America is a thing without question, but the xenophobia white immigrants (Ben, Mads, Felicity) face is a completely different animal from the xenophobia faced by those who are not white (Diego, Riz). Do you think Riz or Diego would get away with Mads Mikkelsen’s casual ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude that fandom finds so fucking charming? The amount of giving a fuck both of them (and all actors of color) have to put on just to be allowed in the door is exhausting. 

Which is to say, again: stay in your fucking lane.

a) italians did not create any worldwide slave trade because Italy DID NOT EXIST AS A NATION UNTIL 1860. which was, uhm, let’s see, more or less when the american civil war started. which means that the worldwide slave trade had begun a lot before then. and you can thank.... british, dutch, french and spanish for it. we were too busy being invaded by the spanish, the french and the austrians at that point. nice try.

Frank and well-reasoned, hijadepavlov's thoughts on the issue of racism in femslash fandom resonated with many members of femslash fandom, as proven by the nearly 3,000 notes amassed by the post.

If you look at the Toronto Census and do some quick math, there were 6,407 Latinas under the age of 14 in 2011 so if we assume equal distribution amongst ages that’s 2,748 Latinas between the ages of 8 and 14 that could have played a younger Isabelle in Shadowhunters but in the interim 6 years it seems they’ve all dissappeared.
