To whoever submitted that DC headcanon about The House of Secrets and The House of mystery...
I’m a little surprised a defunct New 52 based headcanon was just reblogged and liked forty times without anyone questioning it.
The headcanon in question read...
“Dream is irritated. The House of Mystery is currently being used by either Constantine or the JLD. Meanwhile, the House of Secrets was last used by Secret Six before becoming vacant. He created these houses to help catalogue and inspire human imagination/stories–not to be superhero or supervillain bases. As it stands, the House of Secrets will belong to Matthew Cable until a new storyteller is found. Dream thinks he will extend the offer to the next ‘fascinating’ hero or villain that dies.”
But here’s the thing... Though yes, I quite agree that Daniel (Dream) would be very annoyed by this scenario as described... As of Dark Nights metal both houses were restored to their original caretakers, Cain and Abel.
Cain and Abel appear at the immortals gathered during Dark Nights Metal.
That’s Cain in the bottom left and Abel in the upper right, strategically separated so Cain won’t be tempted to disrupt the meeting with routine fratricide. And they were referred to as the “brothers who keep Mystery and Secrets.” (This was (2017).
Then they appear together in Sandman Universe in August 2018.
Then The House of Whispers issue 1 show their houses where they properly belong (also 2018).
Here’s the new House of Whispers landing precariously close to Abel’s House of Secrets in The Dreaming. House of Whispers issue 1. That’s Abel’s stutter.
Also (to the person who submitted that Headcanon) how is it you know Matthew is alive and active in The Dreaming if you didn’t know any of this? Matthew was supposedly “permanently killed off” in the early 2000s by Caitlin R. Kiernan who sent Matthew on to the afterlife (after accidentally getting shot by Lucien...), and she replaced him with an obnoxious white raven named Thesys created from the soul of an alien lifeform from the cellar of The House of Secrets. That story was only officially decanonized in 2018 (though also sort of decanonized earlier than that if you pay attention in Sandman: Endless Nights). Matthew’s so-called perma-death was even brought up in Lucifer’s 2016 comic (which is also no-longer canon). Thankfully those events are no longer canon and Matthew is safe and sound in The Dreaming in his raven form.
