Friend caught a shrew who had somehow stumbled into her below-ground house.
Him soft.
We named him Bartholomew.

Local long-tailed and short-tailed shrews are fascinating finds in McDonald Woods, and valuable residents of our natural world.

Northern short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda) found frozen on a driveway. It has been a low snow year, but there is still enough for rodents to shelter in subnivean spaces. Not sure what he was doing above ground. Interestingly, this shrew species has venomous saliva that allows them to kill or paralyze their prey.
