So, Blaydan.

In the third book of The Cycle of Arawan series, The Black Star.

Dante has in his hands, the Black Star, this magical item that only appears every 1000 years (or was it 10 thousand?) that can basically do anything you want. The last time it appeared it was used to move an entire mountain range that fucked up the whole region’s weather.

Dante has several ideas of what he wants to do with it, including giving himself a longer life span so he can find the Star again and do the same thing. Whatever he wants, this thing will do it.

You know what he does with it?

Brings Blays back to life.

Infinite power at his fingertips and he gives it up for Blays. The guy he hasn’t seen in a few years and has been actively hiding from him because he was pissed that Dante killed his girlfriend (she was practically his wife). The guy that moments before fucked up his original plan to get the Star. The guy he’s been searching for and obsessing over the entire time he was missing.

Dante gives it all up for Blays.

This troupe is called ‘Willfully Weak’ and it’s when a superhero gives up their powers for love. This troupe came about in Superman 2 Man of Steel. Superman gives up his powers so he can live with Lois.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Obviously Dante is still pretty powerful without the Star, however he’s basically giving up borderline godhood (Superman powers) for Blays. Dante wouldn’t do that for anybody else, maybe Cally since he was a fatherish figure, but that’s it. (And even then I still have my doubts he’d give up power for Cally)

Just think about that for a second.

Now I can hear you saying ‘But Reginleif, why wouldn’t he bring his brother back to life? Anyone would do that’

And I would say ‘First, be careful with that blanket statement of ‘anyone’ and second, I said don’t take me seriously’

I, as a shipper, see it this way and you as a non-shipper see it that way. Both are okay 👍

Also, Blays can be in a queer platonic relationship with Dante and still be married to Minn.

Pg. 398 “I don't care. We're going to find Dante. And we're going to save him.”- Blays

“You would sacrifice all of these people for this? Along with our only real chance to kill the Eiden Rane-a chance we have spent everything preparing for? That Dante was fighting for? And you would do all this on the possibility that we might learn a way to undo what has been done?”- Gladdic

“YES! Yes, gods damn you, I would!”

“But what is the point? You would save your friend only to lose the world!”

Pg. 398 “How can you throw so much away like this?”- Gladdic

“Because he would do the same for me.”- Blays

Pg. 508 “I want to know who's telling me this. The friend I've had since before we could grow beards? Or the man whose mind has been stolen by a maniac who means to kill everyone you've ever known?”- Blays

Pg. 507 “He told me to kill Blays, but I think if I deliver both of you to him, he'll change his mind on that.”- Dante

*This also connects well with Blays’ quote on page 505 “Have you always been this arrogant? Or did I just not notice because it was usually turned against someone else?”

*I'm not sure if arrogant is the right word, but, seriously, Dante is 100% sure he can change That Guy's mind about how important Blays is.

Pg. 512 “I know I can't let myself be a part of the lich's new world. But if Dante's there, maybe he'll make it slightly less dark.”- Blays

Pg. 513 “I want to know if you still want to see justice done to him (Gladdic)”.- Dante

“If I asked you to, you'd do it? Spike him right now?”- Blays

“Yes.”

“Leave him be.”

“Why?”

“Because without him, you wouldn't be here.”

*Despite Gladdic helping to save him, Dante would still stab a bitch if his bae wanted him to. That, or what's more likely is that Dante already knew Blays' answer when he asked and knew he wouldn't actually have to kill him. Or, or, he was totally going to kill him, but then remembered Blays might get mad at him again so he's asking for promotion in a roundabout way.

Pg. 484 'For as much paddling as he did that day, Blays found himself almost unable to eat.’

*That's cause you're worried about your bae.

This book didn't have as many Blayden moments, but when it did, it DID!

Ramblings

The Cycle of Arwan/Galand series by Edward W Robertson

If you stop and think about it, you only need Blays to like you. Dante can hate you all he wants, but if you're A-OK to Blays, he won't let Dante kill you. Obviously there are exceptions, all rules have them, but for the most part Blays + ♥️ you= life safe.

Now if Blays doesn't like you, you fucked. Because if he don't like you, Dante really don't like you. Unless you're a crazed monster, odds are Blays won't kill you, but Dante? You're dead as soon as he can get away with it and even then, Blays might look the other way.

There are special circumstances where Blays dislikes you, but lets you live anyway (helping him save Dante is a good way, but super rare and almost impossible. Plus, you could die in the process)

Moral of my ramblings: make sure Blays likes you if nothing else.

"Oh, Blays thinks positively of you, then I guess I won't murder you."- I'm sure this went through Dante's head at least once.

Blays snorted, then caught the look on his face and grew sober. "Okay, we do need to leave. Keep your eyes on the valley, ex-chief Kadda. If it starts to do anything strange, such as rip in half, you might want to run."

Dante: Blays’ shirt fell.

Cally: Why was it loud?

Dante: It had him inside.
