The Dictionary of Imaginary Places

BLAZING WORLD, an archipelago stretching from the North Pole to near the British Isles, through the Greenland and Norwegian seas.

It has a North Pole of its own, thus doubling the cold of those inhospitable regions. Its southern extremity, however, is more temperate: the climate here is mild and pleasant. The entire archipelago is governed by an emperor who resides in the Imperial City. The people of the Blazing World believe in one government, one religion and one language; a government of more than one person, a choice of several religions and a medley of different languages, they equal to "a monster with many heads."

From the North Pole a crystal river leads through several islands to a labyrinth of canals, along whose sides stand cities of marble, alabaster, agate, amber and coral. The islands, and in fact the whole of the Blazing World, are inhabited by people of many colours and races: blue, green, orange; bear-men, fox-men, geese-men, worm-men, satyres, fish-men or sirens, bird-men, fly-men, spider-men, lice-men, ape-men, jackdaw-men, magpie-men, parrot-men. Each type corresponds to a different profession: the bear-men are experimental philosophers; the fox-men are politicians; the bird-men are astronomers, etc. Along the river sail many types of vessels suited to the various types of people; some are shaped like fox-traps; others like bird-nests; the emperor's ships are made of gold; the merchants' ships of leather. All vessels are very light, whatever substance they are made of, and float like wood. The Imperial City, also called Paradise, is built in the Roman style, in gold. A series of canals makes it appear as a group of islands, which in fact it is not. The different blocks are united by bridges. The houses are no more than two storeys high.

The Imperial Palace is built on a hill, surrounded by pillars in a four-mile semicircle with a gate every half mile. The First Gate, which leads from the city itself to the palace, has a cloister on either side, mounted on more pillars. The palace, lit and heated by the sun, is built in the shape of a church, one and a half miles long by one and a half miles broad. The roof is arched and also set on pillars. A notable feature is that a throne can be found in every room, for the convenience of the emperor. The Room of State is paved in green diamonds and there are also diamonds in the arches between the pillars. The roof is of blue diamonds with a carbuncle set in the centre to represent the sun. On either side— east and west—are rubies symbolizing dawn and dusk. The entire decoration gives visitors the impression of a rainbow. The emperor's bedroom is black and even the floor is of black marble, but the ceiling is of mother-of-pearl with the moon and stars picked out in diamonds. The imperial bed is encrusted with carbuncles and more diamonds. Faced with such treasures, the visitor will easily understand the popular saying—that there are more riches in the Blazing World than in all the rest of the planet.

Modern Times Blazing World (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 3 of 4. So I had Blazing World several years back, which was labeled as a “Hoppy Dank Amber,” and now it appears it is a “Dank Nelson IPA,” and the recipe has clearly changed given the color of the body. Not sure why, but this new version is also quite good. Smells quite a bit of herbal qualities and some lighter fruity notes, and this has a solid creamy body with light grain sweetness. Quite a departure from the hefty amber body with roast qualities from before, but I’m not complaining.

Danitz x Klein Chinese fic guide 🐈‍⬛🦮

As promised, here is my reclist for fics that ship Danitz Dubois with Klein Moretti and his various personas (aka BlazingWorld, aka DaKe, aka KeNi, etc. henceforth referred to as d/k for convenience) in Chinese on Lofter (the Chinese equivalent of Tumblr) and a few on Ao3, plus tips on how to access and navigate Lofter.

This is just the handful of links that I originally saved for personal reference; on Lofter d/k is a popular ship with lots of content! I’m sure I’ve only scratched the surface.

I’ll link to one or two fics that I liked from each account, but consider these author recommendations. I’ll be using the English titles bc they’re easier for me to type, but don’t take the translations too seriously.

Lofter tips:

First make a WeChat or Weibo account (must make the account in the apps), then use that to log on to Lofter (on your computer). When searching for lotm content, I refer to this list of chinese tags. Some users tag both the characters and the ship, some just tag the ship. 达克 [DaKe] implies Danitz tops but is also the more general tag (from what I’ve seen), 克尼 [KeNi] implies Klein tops — but there’s no actual smut on Lofter. Authors will sometimes post instructions to find the smutty parts of their fics on other platforms, the easiest is when you can just search the title (in chinese!) on ao3.

In order to translate fics, I just use google chrome (rip) and its built-in translator and I find the results are pretty good. You can use whatever method you prefer, but if you’re planning to copy the text into an mtl, know that you can’t highlight text in most blog posts, however you can highlight it if you’re viewing the post directly from the search results instead of on the op’s blog. If you’re on mobile, I have no idea. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blog layout is similar to tumblr, every blog has a search bar, a ‘private message’ button, and an ‘archive’ button. I mostly use the archive to find fics, most users will put the ship name first in the title of the post. You can also click on the tags at the bottom of a post like on tumblr, but blogs with the default layout don’t automatically collapse long posts so this can involve a lot of scrolling.

A few more notes:

达克 DaKe will often be translated as ‘Dark,’ 克尼 KeNi is Kni or Kenny, etc., the translator doesn’t know how to handle ship names or non-chinese character names since they aren’t actual words. The name Gehrman (格尔曼) is another a major victim of this issue, I’ve seen the translator spell it a dozen different ways.

‘CP’ means ship (character pairing)

PA = AU (I forget what it stands for)

Translators will often get pronouns wrong! Especially in intimate scenes!! I believe this is because the original sentence in Chinese lacks pronouns, so when the translator adds them in to make a grammatically correct English statement, it will ‘assume’ the gender based on context.

Ao3 recs:

Chinese authors tend to use ao3 as a place to post explicit content that would get taken down on Chinese platforms — so the fics are almost all smut. It can be hard to tell what a fic is about from the brief descriptions and minimal tags, you kinda have to click to find out if it’s good. However sorting by either kudos or word count can help bring the best stuff to the top of the pile.

I haven’t really been keeping track of fics that I like on ao3, so this is just a short list of a few that I remember. Most if not all of these authors are also on Lofter, but since they have ao3 accounts (instead of posting anonymously), I’m listing them separately from the Lofter recs.
