I constantly confuse things about mzds(? I also always get the acronym wrong) but maybe wwx not using a flute but a something else after he reincarnates?
Okay I know you meant another instrument probably BUT—
Mo Xuanyu’s core was nothing impressive. He started learning late and all the cleverness he’d shown by summoning Wei Wuxian couldn’t make up for it.
But a golden core was a golden core, was so incredibly bright when Wei Wuxian had only known emptiness for so long. He hadn’t ever gotten used to it - you can’t get used to that kind of hollowedness. And despite his relatively weak core, Mo Xuanyu had been strong enough to carry a blade. Much like Suibian used to, the weapon called out to him from where it was hidden beneath the floorboard, most likely to avoid the wandering hands of his thieving cousin. The blade was as terribly decorated as any Jin sword, lavish gold, where the rest of Mo Xuanyu’s belongings were dirty and broken.
It doesn’t feel like Suibian in his hands, yields differently, but there’s nothing protesting Wei Wuxian’s handling of it. Much like its original wielder, it was now in Wei Wuxian’s hands.
When the screaming started, Wei Wuxian still reached for Chenqing first, but in absence of the dizi, going for a sword that didn’t exhaust him was his second thought, especially with all the little Lan around.
He couldn’t just let these children die, never mind on a nighthunt so far above their skill level.
Mo Xuanyu’s sword wasn’t particularly made to withstand great damage in combat against other blades, much too thin and fragile, though Wei Wuxian couldn’t tell if that was by design or not, but with enough energy, it held up just fine against the demonic arm targeting them.
“Out of the way!” He yelled at the loudmouth Lan, dragging the possessed body outside in the courtyard.
Wei Wuxian had missed this terribly. Never would he have admitted this before, but regardless of the usefulness of resentful energy, it wasn’t the same as using a cultivator’s blade. Mo Xuanyu’s body wasn’t in as great a condition as it could be, but Wei Wuxian’s memory held up just well enough, quick steps dancing around his enemy until he found an opening.
With one swift move, he pierced the blade through the arm, only momentarily wondering whether it could even sustain that kind of damage. The spiritual energy surged and the sword didn’t shatter.
The little Lan only stared at him in disbelief.
“What?” Wei Wuxian grinned. “I told you I was a cultivator!”
At Lanling Jin, whose style Wei Wuxian hadn’t even attempted to imitate in the heat of battle. Oh, well, the children probably couldn’t tell either.
“Anyone of you got something to trap this spirit? I can’t keep it down infinitely.”
Or much longer at all, Wei Wuxian thought as his knees wobbled. The fight hadn’t even been that long, nothing like the soars he used to have with Jiang Cheng but—
“I think I’m going to pass out.”
He was vaguely aware of one of the Lan scrambling to catch him before he crashed to the ground, but exhaustion claimed him before he knew who.
