Uryū was used to killing.

He was used to the easy control and flow of his spirit energy, using it to destroy, to kill the hollows that roamed through Kagimino City. It was his legacy, his duty, his privilege. He enjoyed it.

But now, as he lay here on the ground with his life’s blood seeping into the cracks between the paving slabs beneath him, he found absolutely nothing pleasurable about the delivery of death. 

And that wasn’t because he was on the receiving end.

Well, mostly not.

Of course, it was different when it was a hollow, he thought to himself dully through the pain. Hollows weren’t beings in the same way Kurosaki was.

Kurosaki…

Uryū shuddered painfully as he remembered the all-too recent sounds of the soul reapers hurting, killing Kurosaki. It was so wrong. Kurosaki’s stubborn and foolhardy declarations were annoying, sure, but he didn’t deserve to die for them. He didn’t deserve to die for having gained Rukia Kichiki’s powers. 

He didn’t deserve to die at all. 

Ah, Uryū thought hazily through the pain as his side throbbed, that’s it. That was the difference between what he as a quincy did to hollows and what those soul reapers had done to Kurosaki. It was all to do with whether the being on the receiving end deserved it.

He turned his head wearily, wincing at the pain and the monumental effort that took. His glasses were broken beyond repair now, bridge bent across his nose and lenses fragmented, but he squinted through them anyway, trying to catch a glimpse of Kurosaki.

Blood.

So much blood that not even the driving rain could dilute it to a lighter red.

Uryū shuddered again, gasping as the movement aggravated his wounds. Kurosaki’s hoarse, agonised cry echoed in his ears, though he’d long since gone horribly quiet. 

So much blood.

Hollows didn’t bleed, after all.

Hollows…

Uryū swallowed. Thinking.

The soul reapers had mentioned Menos Grande, and a report. Like they’d been drawn to Kagimino by it, then had only stumbled on Rukia— and Kurosaki— by chance.

Which meant…

Which meant.

Uryû shifted with another pulse of pain to look Kurosaki’s prone form up and down. So, so much blood.

“This could be all my fault,” he croaked into the petrichor-soaked air. Oh, it had been such a stupid, stupid idea, and now Kurosaki… Kurosaki might die for Uryū’s pride. Like he almost had before. 

Kurosaki didn’t respond to Uryū’s whisper, which was the furthest thing from good, but there was nothing he could do about that except finish speaking the sour words of regret into the air. “If it is… I’m so sorry.”

Silence.

Rain and blood and tears mingled in one sorry mixture and dripped off Uryū’s nose.

“So you got it from Ichigo’s friend, Keigo? He told you it was called that?”

“Yup!” Her pink cheeks bulged as she happily chewed on the sweet candy.

“Right.” Yumichika rubbed pinched the bridge of his nose and didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when Kenpachi found out about this latest discovery from the world of the living.

“And who else have you offered some to?” He asked slowly, like a man preparing for a fatal blow. 

“Oh, just Byakushi, Nana... and Re-Chan!” She took another handful of the brightly colored pebbles and stuffed them in her mouth.

“You-You offered some of this to Unhonana Taicho?” Yumichika stuttered, feeling faint.

“Mhm. She said no, and that she wanted to ‘have a little chat’ with Kenny. Whatever than means.” She picked up one of the little candies and squinted at it. “I think I like the MMMs more than the Skitties!”

At that moment, Ikkaku flew into the room, face flushed as he shot a terrifying glare at the little pink haired lieutenant. He choked and made a gargling sound of distress as Kenpachi followed him in, looming over the three in that terrifying manner he had perfected. The Captain was pissed. Yachiru looked at him innocently, one finger to her lips, eyes wide and curious.

“Yachiru.” He growled, reistu flaring and lashing out to score the walls.

Youwalked towards your backyard porch, a tray with hot water, tea, hotchocolate, and asmall plate of pastries that you had made a bit earlier. You gentlyplaced the tray down on the small table that sat between whereToshiro had decided to sit and where you quickly planted yourself.His brow raised slightly, looking at all the items on the tray.“Youforgot cups,” he said flatly, causing you to cover your face withyour hands.“Howcould I forget the cups?!”“Don’tworry, I’ll get them.” He quickly stood up, glancing down at thetray again before grabbing cups from the kitchen. He brought fourout, placing them on the tray, making tea for both of them. He gentlyhanded her the warm cup, taking his seat again.“Youreally seem to like hot chocolate, huh?”“Yeah!Ithink it’s really fitting that the humans like to drink it duringthe colder months! It’s sweet and warm and is really good to dipcookies in!” You grinned, gently blowing on the cup of tea in yourhands. Hestared quietly at the sky as he thought to himself, watching as smallflecks of white began to fall from above. Your eyes widened indelight, finishing your sip of tea before grinning.“It’ssnowing!” He blinked, looking over at you.“Italways snows around this time…?”“Iknow, but I never get to see the first snow of the season! It’salways the prettiest! It shows the transition from autumn to winter.”Hecouldn’t help but give a small smile in your direction, sipping histea as you both continued to watch the snow fall.

“Thewater’s cold…” You frowned, glancing towards your boyfriendwith big sad eyes. It had been about an hour of watching the snowgathering on the ground and talking since you first sat down. You hadbegun to get a bit chilly and, in your usual stubbornness, refused toget a coat and insisted that the hot chocolate would warm you rightup. That was the current issue at hand, no more hot water for the hotchocolate.“I’llget some more,” he said with a roll of his eyes, “brat.”“Loveyou, ‘Shiro!” you shouted with delight, grinning at his figure ashe disappeared inside. It only took him a few minutes to warm up somemore water, watchingthrough the kitchen window as the snow continued to fall. He wonderedhow much snow they would be getting for the first snow of the season.It didn’t usually snow this much this early—not that he minded,but he was curious to say the least. He blinked out of his thoughts,the whistle of the kettle bringing him back to the task at hand.Carefully grabbing it, he set back out to the back porch, placing itgingerly on the tray. His brows raised  at your absence, curious towhere you could have gone. He didn’t hear the door, so he knew youdidn’t go back inside. A stifled giggle caught his attention,looking out toward the snow covered yard—only to get hit in theface by a snowball. He groaned and wiped the snow off his face,giving a gentle leer towards you.“Howchildish,” he murmured, about to sit back down.“Soyou’re forfeiting?” A wide grin was plastered on your lips, handson your hips. His brows knitted together, falling for your stupidtaunt.

Itwas a little while after the snowball fight that you were lying nextto Toshiro, curled up at his side happily. You both were panting,exhausted and quite literally coveredin snow. He grumbled something under his breath, messing up your snowfilled hair.“Hey,Toshiro?” you smiled over at him, waiting for him to acknowledgeyou.“Nn?”“Youknow you don’t have to be so serious around me, right?
