A moment of weakness: My muse has blackmail over yours.

What he found out about Rhode Island was unexpected, but not unwelcome. He made sure to keep the information about his fellow agent in mind for if he ever needed a favor from the other man, whatever it may be. Optimistically, Rhode wouldn’t have figured out that there was any blackmail before that opportune moment to pull it out and inform him as such. Until then, he’d have to keep quiet about it, which wouldn’t be as hard for him as others due to the amount of time he goes without talking to anyone. However, upon seeing the younger agent without another agent around, Wyoming decided to have a small chat with him, giving a small nod as he approached the other man,  “Greetings chap, taking it easy between deployments are we?”

It had been ages since California had gone on a mission. Not since her eye injury in the field, in fact. She wanted to get back into the fight, but the medics and the Counselor hadn’t cleared her just yet, despite her progress. The Counselor had told her to be patient, that she would get back to working soon, but it was hard to do that when her enemies were still out there and a war was still raging on.

And there was nothing she could do to help in her current state.

So she spent most of her time in the recreation room, lazing around. Sometimes she would stare out of the large observation window at the stars to pass time. Other times she would sharpen her prized katana, Ravensmote or engage in a hobby she had started while she was convalescing: learning Sangheili.

Today was different. California was trying to do some reading, which was unusual for her even before she injured her eye. Because of her life circumstances, she couldn’t read very well and, though that had improved since joining Freelancer to the point it was enough to get by, it still wasn’t as good as it could be. Trying to do so with one eye bandaged up didn’t help, but it was either that or be bored.

Or, as fate might have it, converse with whomever had entered the room.

Rhode took his extended hand with a grin. Maybe this guy was less formal than he expected. “I’ll remember that. We got the annoying names, huh? Just call me Rhode. Rhode Island sounds pretentious.”

He had seen agents Maine and Carolina in the training room, and he had a hard time believing he had been signed on to this project at all. The idea that not all of the soldiers were cutthroat elites was comforting.

He laughed, shaking Rhode’s hand briefly before withdrawing. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Rhode. We really did get the annoying names, didn’t we?”

Massie shifted the position of his helmet on his hip, adjusting it under his arm. He wasn’t much of a fan of leaving his armor on outside of missions and the training room. Ah, that reminded him… “I can show you around, if you feel so inclined.”

(( First off, thank you very much! I’m glad you think I’m doing a good job at this, I try my best for people to enjoy this guy. And I’d love for Rhode and Wyoming to have a better relationship, the thing is Wyoming’s a man who manipulates, lies and generally fucks around with people with a general distrust of others. So unfortunately improving relationships can be a bit of a slower grind unless he’s got some sort of common ground he can relate to (ex: enjoying tea, playing cards, trolling people) ))
