always love it when people ask if the sherlock fandom is “okay” like wtf do you mean are we okay what does okay mean? we’ve preserved through four seasons of benadryl cucumber and martin freeman, shipped johnxsherlock, mycroftxlestrade, and moriartyxmoran (and sebastian ain’t even in the show?). we’ve fallen for the simplest lies and come up with solutions for problems the peasant writers are still pondering. we’ve seen our main character die for two years, seen him take drugs for his flatmate, seen multiple deaths in various ways. the first episode was about suicide. the last one was about a delirious sister and a dead best friend. we’ve walked into hell and found the stairs leading back to earth. we’ve suffered, we’ve lost pieces of ourselves, we’ve collapsed in misery and risen in delight. but nothing, nothing, will ever stop us from being a part of our broken family. heaven can soar away from us without sherlock and we will stare after it, but if sherlock is in hell, we will run into it with outstretched arms, letting out cries of laughter as we rejoice with the members of our fellow fandom.

today's writing tip: being bilingual!

I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY TIMES BOOKS THAT ARE FANTASTIC AND THEN STUMBLE ACROSS SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

"Hey, I'm John." John smiled warmly, extending a hand. "Hola, me llamo Carlos." The other man greeted him warmly. John blinked at him in confusion. "Sorry," the man said, "it's hard to switch back sometimes. I'm Carlos, by the way."

YEAH EVERYTHIN ELSE IS BELOW THE CUT PLZ READ IT IF YOU'RE GONNA WRITE A BILINGUAL CHARACTER (AND FEEL FREE TO COMMENT WITH CORRECTIONS AND EXTRA STUFF TO KNOW BECAUSE I'M RUNNING ON 2 HOURS OF SLEEP AND ONE KISS)

BEING BILINGUAL IS LIKE HAVING TWO BRAINS SORTA

A MORE ACCURATE EXAMPLE ARE THESE (yes these have happened to me):

"it's...God, what's the word...Numero uno, Numero uno in English, God, what is it?" (angry muttering sounds)

*to a teacher (my greatest regret)*"¿Puedo ir al baño, señor?" "...What?" "I...Jesus, what is it in English? The...ay, dios mío, no recuerdo el nombre..." *teacher has a general look of confusion* (note: this is NOT an 'oh noooo it's hard to switch back' it's a 'i can't think of the words in english so i'ma say them in spanish')

THINK OF IT LIKE AN ALTERNATE FORM OF COMMUNICATION IF IT HELPS

YOU CAN USE BOTH CONSCIOUSLY, WHICHEVER ONE YOU WERE RAISED ON IS USUALLY YOUR MAIN ONE THO (or if you were raised on both then you're special :>)

if you're writing from a bilingual character's pov:

they can use words from their other language in their narration? and they should know what they mean?

i find that it helps to incorporate some sort of "oh shit I can't think of it in my regular language" piece in there at least once because it honestly make sthe character more relatable to actual bilingual people and therefore more likable
