Sudden MOTIVATION

At sixteen, Mike Wheeler gets a job at the movie theatre, working the reels. It’s great—at first. Until he’s seen The Princess Bride forty-three times and been through RoboCop so many times he’s starting to dream about it. But none of that really matters because Mike’s doing this to save money. He wants to buy El something nice for her sixteenth birthday—he’s not sure what yet, and it kind of scares him because holy shit it’s next month. And, aside from that, he’s hoping to save enough to get something for his mom too. A just because present. Just because things have been tough since his dad walked out after Christmas. Better, but still tough.

His weekends, all summer and through the fall, when not spent with his nose pressed to the spine of a math textbook, are saturated with work. It’s gotten to the point where a night at work has to double as a date-night with El and Mike feels kind of bad about that—sometimes.

But when he glances over at her, happy to be watching someone other than Westley or Princess Buttercup, he can tell she’s enjoying herself. Feet propped up on the projector, worn sneakers pulled over the pair of warm socks she stole from him last winter, El munches on extra-buttery popcorn, her lips moving in unison with the movie’s dialogue.

He’s still not sure what to get for her birthday, but Mike Wheeler is sure of one thing. And her name is El Hopper.
