You know I find it interesting how people always talk about Sam being the one yearning in one sided Sastiel, but what if it was the opposite? I mean, Sam thinking of Castiel as a friend only is a bit plausible. When the angel came down he made it clear he and Dean were closer. Maybe once Castiel got behind all the layers of Sam he realized that, no, he didn’t like Dean as much as he did Sam. The angel had only liked Dean because of heavens whispers, Dean was Micheal’s vessel, so it only made sense he was good. But Sam? Despite everything, the man chose kindness, despite being Lucifer’s vessel, he always did what he thought was right.
Maybe the saying “first impressions are everything” isn’t exactly false. Castiel learned that the hard way.
