Laura Dewey Bridgman is credited as the first deaf and blind child to learn to read and write (50 years prior to Helen Keller). She was born in 1829 and lost both her sight and hearing at two years old due to scarlet fever. She attended the Perkins School for the Blind which is the oldest school for the blind in the United States, there she learned to read braille as well as a tactile form of sign language and even write with a special alphabet. The above photograph shows Bridgman as an adult teaching a Perkins student, Oliver Caswell thus continuing to give future generations of children the ability to learn and express themselves despite challenges.
