While on a mission, something goes very wrong. A Galra laser shot grazes Pidge right across the eyes. She goes in a pod for a few hours, and they think she’s fine. The blood and torn muscle and skin and other tissue are cleaned up and healed, there’s no scarring, and while Keith's still angry at himself for letting her get hurt, of course, he's glad she seems to be all right.
It's when she comes out of the pod that they find out all's not as all right as they think. The pod's shield comes down, and she tries to take a step forward, but her legs give out, making her gasp slightly. Keith catches her before she can fall, though, cradling her a bit, helping get her to her feet. And she notices that it's dark, even with her eyes open, that she can't see anything, but she also knows who it is that caught her, even without him saying anything. They’re all different, sure, but she’d still know him anywhere. She'd know him blind. "Thanks, Keith..."
And he pointedly ignores the way his cheeks flush and his heart beats faster at the way she knows it's him without her bearings, without even being able to see him clearly yet, if at all, since her eyes were closed for a bit there. He swallows. "A-anytime." He clears his throat, a kind smile maybe a little forced on his face (because he's still pissed that he let this happen). "You know it's always a little rough when you first step out."
She laughs breathlessly, tossing a smile his way, but he immediately doesn't like the way she doesn't meet his eyes, does her best, but can't, the way her amber eyes are slightly muted. That doesn't look right... "Yeah..." She looks around, and she looks back toward him with a raised brow. "Why's it so dark in here?" She frowns, groans a little. "Don't tell me the crystal needs to be replaced again. Shay's Balmera doesn't grow them that often..."
Keith's heart stops, the others', too. "W-what do you mean, 'so dark,' Pidge?" He puts a hand on her shoulder, worry churning his gut. "It's just as lit up as always."
Pidge's frown deepens, worry lines forming on her brow. She feels nauseous all of a sudden. "I...I mean it's pitch black," she clarifies truthfully. "I-I can't see a thing. No shapes or shadows or anything."
Allura's hand flies to her mouth, and she and Coran look at each other, Hunk and Lance doing the same, Keith looking to Shiro. Keith clenches his fist, swallows down the bile that threatens at the base of his throat. God, why? Why her? Why now? Why not him, for God's sake?
"Pidge..." his voice is even, soft, kind, but she knows him too well; she can hear the worry just behind it like crazy, "...I think something went wrong on that mission, more than we know. I think..." he knows she wouldn't want him to drag it out, so he rips it off like a Band-Aid, "...I think you're blind."
If Pidge's face could look more devastated and scared, sad, he'd like to see her try. The look on her face makes him want to punch himself, stab himself in the gut. Honestly, that would be preferable to this. How could this happen? How? Why didn't the tank heal her? Does she need to go back in? He knows the tanks don't let them out unless all that can be healed is, but...that can't be right. This can't be right. She can't be...
"Blind...?" Pidge repeats, voice breaking the slightest bit at the end. She looks up at him again, but she doesn't meet his eyes, can't, so it hurts his heart. "How?" There are tears starting, and she can't...her throat's constricting. No. She can't cry now. Not now. Stubbornly, she bites her trembling lower lip and reaches up to wipe her eyes. She looks over toward where she thinks Allura is. "Why didn't the tank heal me? W-what happened?"
Nobody knows, and they try to figure it out, but Allura warns her it could take time. Pidge doesn't think she can stay there any longer, so she tries to leave...but she can't figure out where she is in the castle, map in her head and calculations be damned. Keith finds her, and she asks him to take her to the training deck, asks him to spar with her. "I need to get out some of these nerves and worry before I throw up," she tells him candidly, and he obliges. How can he refuse her, especially like this?
They spar for a bit, but then she tries the drone. She just wants to see if she can do it. She held her own well enough with him, after all. But as it turns out, the sounds and hits she takes make her realize she can't do this, that she's going to need help, help she hasn't needed in a long time, and then the robot shoves her into a wall hard enough to knock the breath out of her, and it doesn't stop attacking, even when she tells it, when Keith, who's spotting her, does. It must be a malfunction from the last attack. She tries to fight back, but things don't go well because she’s starting to panic, the pressure of what’s happening is starting to get to her, and it would have taken her head off if Keith didn't step in.
She's shaking like a leaf by the time the drone's dispatched, and she collapses to her knees, tears streaming down her face. She clutches at her chest, fist in her shirt over her heart. "I can't—I can't find my family like this!" she sobs, doing her best to keep her breathing under control, but she knows she's not getting much in edgewise. "M-Matt and Dad are—they're waiting for me! I can't—I can't be fucking blind!" Her voice breaks at the same time that she slams her fist into the floor. "I have to— I can't be on the team like this!" Goosebumps rush over her skin, and she shudders violently in realization. "Oh, my God, I can't— H-how can I pilot Green if I can't see? How can I do anything of value for you guys if I can't fucking see?" Her shoulders slump, her whole body, and for a moment, it's like all the fight's left her in her shock and hurt. "I can't... Matt and Dad and you guys...you all need me..." A harsh sob escapes her. "I can't...be useless...” she squeezes her eyes shut, “…not now..."
