Block tumblr ads in app

On Android, (if your device supports Private DNS by default) just find these options on your device, otherwise try using their app.

Settings > Networking > Private DNS > specify "dns.adguard.com" and save

iOS blocking is not as robust I believe, either download their app or use the link above to download a Profile which will update your DNS settings to use AdGuard

Otherwise, setup Pi-hole and/or AdGuard Home for your home networking (WiFi) DNS.

You can use a VPN like Wireguard or Tailscale to be able to block ads when you're using mobile data out-and-about by connecting back home to block them

I saw the post about using blokada to block tumblr live on Android, and then you mentioned blocking domains. How do I block domains?

When you install Blokada 5 and launch it, there should be four tabs at the bottom of the screen. The 2nd-left tab has a symbol of three vertical bars, and when you tap on it, says Activity. From here you can view all the domains your phone is trying to connect to. Any domain that you see in green, you can tap on to add it to the Blocked list.

If you launch Tumblr then go back to the Blokada Activity tab, you should see all the domains it's trying to connect to, including ones like "auth.gateway.tumblr-live.com" (yes, your phone connects to this whenever you launch Tumblr, even if you never open the Tumblr Live page). Tap those suckers and block them! (and if they scroll out of view too quickly, use the search 🔍 at the top of the screen to filter for "tumblr" and you should see them all again.)

Me: Twitter isn't so bad, all their ads are user accounts, so you can just block them as they come up!

just a side note before the post begins: i’m using mozilla firefox browser with ad block plus as my ad blocker.

okay so the way abp works is it has an option to “block element”

you can basically block fuckin anything, so you click on block element and then click on this mans annoying fuckin face

can anyone give me advice on how to block/remove the tumblr ads I’m getting?

I have a phobia of spiders and I have seen THREE spider advertisements today and I’m seriously close to having a panic attack and now I never want to use tumblr again

and they’re not the type of ads with an actual tumblr account you can block, they’re just the advertisements that stick there and you can’t do anything to them

Not sure, I don't personally use those apps. But you have options!

Use a "front-end client" app. Basically an unofficial youtube app that can fetch yt videos, comments, etc, but blocks the ads itself. For ad-free Youtube I recommend using NewPipe. For ad-free Twitch, I've heard Twire is good. (I have a longer post about how to do this stuff here. It also links to an app for ad-free Spotify Premium, if you're interested.)

Try it out and see if it works! Blokada is a filter for all your phone's network connections, so if those apps use separate connections for ads versus regular content, then you can block just the ad connections. So, open an app you want to try, (you may need to wait til you see an ad), then go to Blokada and look for connections that look ad-related. Block em and see what happens. It will either A) block some ads, B) block some other functionality, or C) do nothing. Worst case, you can always unblock the connection again. Just by toying around with this, I've discovered some domains can be blocked for Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to reduce ads and trackers.

Use NextDNS. Per the app's description, you also need to create a (free) online account, set up adblocking on it, then connect that to your app:

You can set your configuration ID from your NextDNS account in the Settings to bring your blocking policy to your phone and get Analytics and Logs about your traffic.

If you do not have a NextDNS account yet, you can create one for free at https://nextdns.io.
