Ending Digital Divide: Hand in Hand in Reaching People Behind

There is a quote by Marshall McLuhan that goes “We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.”. Technology is like negotiation between tools and digital users. Technology continues to offer opportunities. However, it slowly shapes our norms, behavior, way of thinking and personalities. The world is slowly transforming into a new digital globe. But the question is, are we all into this big change?  Can we survive adapting to new changes while half of our people are being left behind? Would there be a great wall that would hinder our connection among those people struggling to cope with the new normal? This digital divide has been one of the biggest challenges we continue to fight upon the birth of technology. Digital divide has been an issue in which socioeconomic background matter among individuals, social classes, business and even countries which has become a standard among these fields.

 We students usually observe and experience digital divide. In scenarios like competitions, universities who have the capability to supply its students with equipment have a great edge among others. This is because they only have to focus on training its students. On the other hand, those universities who are insufficient with equipment still need to find solution on this matter which affects the learning process and information the students get. On this simple matter there is already inequality and prejudice. How much more on bigger situations like in between countries. There are still several countries who are struggling to provide every individual to connect and access information. In bridging the gap of digital divide, every individual must be understanding, innovative, and literate in using digital devices. We must understand the struggles of both sides to stop discrimination and underestimation. Part of the world may still have no full access to what technology offers but if we have the heart and mind in understanding each other then we can surpass this obstacle.

Nowadays when you hear the term piracy, the first place your mind goes may not be the bandits of the sea, stealing and plummeting ships as they see fit. Instead you may think about a very different type of piracy, one that lacks eye patch and peg legs, but involves an average citizen with an internet connection and a desire to listen to music. A large percentage of the consumer population would agree that stealing is illegal and that going into a store to take whatever you want is not something they would support. Why then is piracy such a common and alarmingly OK thing in today’s society? Almost 70% of consumers do not see a problem with piracy, and it has become such a common thing that by 2011 approximately 22% of all global internet bandwidth was used of online piracy. The main reasons consumers do not see a problem with piracy are due to the facts that it is so easy to hop online and download whatever you are looking for, and almost excessively expensive to do otherwise. The main arguments put forth against piracy is that it undermines and steals from the people who create the content being stolen. They argue that piracy has a negative effect on the economy by reducing sales in music/movie industries and many other facets.

Pirating/streaming music and movies is the preferred method of acquiring them in today’s society, and I believe that may very well result in the laws around piracy reflecting that. To ruin someones life with prison and debt from stealing 30 songs may be seen as excessive by a society that actively engages in piracy.Piracy has, but even the copyright holders are beginning to accept the new piracy-based industry. Some artists have already taken a firm stand and are attempting to fight against this illegal sharing, but others are embracing and adapting to the new industry.

The Setbacks of Piracy

“Piracy is the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work”, this is according to the Oxford Dictionary which specifically describes what piracy is all about. From this, we can safely say that piracy is an illegal act and is punishable by law of most, if not all, countries from all over the world. According to a website called  The Economic Times, you are committing piracy when you’re duplicating  copyrighted works and profit from them as they are being sold at a substantially low price. It is to suit the general public’s taste and not to mention their budgets in the ‘grey’ market. Especially in today’s Digital Age where technology is continuing to grow more easier to use and access, comes piracy getting more rampant than before as both are connected in some ways to each other. Although there are already enough if not many laws passed both nationally and international level, there are still people willing break to these laws and continue to make piracies. These are specially noticed in the film and music industries, which often are costly for some people that is why they’re buying the pirated versions of these film and music. 

Piracy is done in many ways and forms. There are video piracy, cable piracy, and the most popular ones are DVD or CD piracy. Each have their own ways of being duplicated and distributed but all are punishable by law. That is the number one setback of piracy, where there is a risk of you being caught and punished not only if you make and reproduce them but by also buying them. According to Digital Piracy: Advantages and Disadvantages of Piracy (Multimedia Industry), an article blog published online, although there are said advantages of making piracies, there also setbacks or disadvantages to this act. One of it is when you download a free-file online, this will make you susceptible to transmittable viruses and ad-wares that will end up lagging your device or much worse. Another setback of piracy is that because it is an illegal act, the means of acquiring them are often made in discrete thus it may not be as accurate and well-defined than the original. This can be observed in pirated films where there are sometimes people walking across the film as it was taken in cinemas in secret. And the setback we often forget as we are vent on acquiring this forms of media is that although piracies are much more easy and cheaper to buy, sometimes the rarer things we’ve waited and worked hard to acquire will give us more satisfaction than cheap and mass-produced things. That is why avid fans often take pride in buying limited editions and original items from their idols as they want to be recognized as a true fan and also recognize the significance of an item that no amount of money would even hinder them to acquire it.

Piracy, from the word itself brings chaos to the people. One of the biggest drawbacks that the virtual community has to face. It is the act of stealing; and disturbing copyrighted content digitally without permission, such as music, video games, software; and other content that is made by hardworking people, it's popularity grew alongside with the internet. Piracy and it's significant negative correlation between profit and free content disturbs the equilibrium of peace within the virtual community. Less profits means less money to invest in software, music, movies etc, reducing sales, because of piracy and stolen profits many people lost their jobs and struggles to support their family, unethical actions must not be put into practice in order for us civilization to advance, having reduce the amount of money means reducing the amount of investment to developing new products which is why it's considered a disadvantage to the virtual society. 

Piracy is considered a crime which is very relevant among people who're into the media. Piracy is one of the things that other countries really give attention to but compared to the Philippines, this issue has less attention. Piracy is an act that each one of us must not commit because consider the hard work of the original owner of that certain music, movie, or video. In many ways, piracy is carried on, like video piracy, cable piracy, and DVD / CD piracy. Video piracy takes place when, without proper permission from the right holder. The ability and appeal to pirate music and video will increase as more people move from analog modems to broadband internet connections. To ensure that if the majority of the population is uploaded, the concept of intellectual property protection does not disappear. It appears to be a promising field for future research to investigate the role of piracy in demand dynamics and the distribution of product success.

The online piracy is one of the common issue that existing in our society nowadays. Copying and owning the ideas and information of others without the real owner's permission can be called as an illegal act. Piracy refers to unauthorized duplication of copyrighted content, the legal act of duplicating, copying, or sharing a digital work without the permission of the copyright holder, a violation of copyright law. It was stealing, if you are caught to copying and distributing illegal copies of information, software, or to the internet, you could be held liable under both civil and criminal law. Copyright owners worry that the bill will leave the online service providers without any responsibility for policing their own networks. 

As an individual mainly speaking my thoughts about setbacks of privacy, sometimes it is important to have a right to be let alone, or freedom from interference or intrusion. It is also significantly to have some control over how your personal information is shared or collected and used. Setbacks of our privacy the progress how our private informations are transfered to other individuals the progressive acquiring of the privacy. Piracy has a negative effects especially in our economy because of the consumers who buy piracy or illegal copyrighted movies that prices are low and easy to watch instead of watching movies in Cinemas that may help the film industry and it can give you the best quality of the movie. Selling of Piracy movies is illegal and against the law. Once you are caught by the authority, you can face the heavy consequences. It is the number one enemy of technology and film industries because piracy can make them down.

All of these affects every single working person in the industries  negatively by having  less money to invest in new software . that cause people lost there work and struggle financially due to stolen profits and less money to invest.   Intellectual property protection is critical to fostering innovation. Without protection of ideas, businesses and individuals would not reap the full benefits of their inventions and would focus less on research and development. SCENARIO 2: A professor has posted his class notes on a web page available to the public. He wants to scan an article from a copyrighted journal and add it to his web page. FAIR USE? No, if access is open to the public, then this use is probably not a fair use. No exclusively educational purpose can be guaranteed by putting the article on the web, and such conduct would arguably violate the copyright holder's right of public distribution. If access to the web page is restricted, then it is more likely to be fair use. 

 Piracy is a controversial issue in today's society. Online distribution among legitimate and ilicit distributors alike, uploading/streaming a video of unauthorized copyrighted material such as KissAnime, Gogoanime, Cartooncrazy, and KimCartoon that hosts unauthorized TV shows through various servers is piracy. But it also has its positive sides. A movie travels to different parts of world through torrents. Many movies don't get released worldwide for different reasons. Even if the movie is released in foreign country, it doesn't reach the smaller towns. DVDs are hard to find in towns. And sometimes they are exorbitantly priced. So movie piracy brings the movie to a larger audience. All of these affects every single working person in the industries  negatively by having  less money to invest in new software . that cause people lost there work and struggle financially due to stolen profits and less money to invest. The most practical situation to use them is when we do a research. Intellectual property, copyright and fair use are the things we could use and input on our research for it to be more effective, successful, objective and convincing but we must also remember that not following guidelines could make us a sinner in the eyes of the law and could be later on be jailed. Thus, their guidelines and standards that they have set must be use effectively and with accordance in our research to have it look more effectively, objectively and accurately. These guidelines will not only give us a better research but will also make us more responsible persons if we'll know how to use them well and follow the guidelines.

However, there are people who are uneducated or having no experience in a certain area so they tend to steal or copy other people's work for their own desire and envy, which makes them gain profit out of it. Piracy takes place in this kind of situation where there is a duplication of material that came from copyrighted work. In addition, many people can benefit from piracy, for it gives them the advantage to survive by selling and money to be able to sustain their everyday needs. Even though piracy is a crime, many people are constantly utilizing it, but the consequences are most risky and will be severe. Moreover, due to the tons of dilemmas and cases regarding piracy, people are being petitioned to cease this kind of activity. In line with this, it is a transgression in the law, if an individual was convicted because of piracy. Piracy can be a source of many products like DVDs and videos, it can also be a cause of computer viruses that can harm the software on the computer. In conclusion, the result can cost a professional's way of living. Most creators, authors, and inventors creating original content tend to have second thoughts in showcasing their work, proposals, and inventions to the public. Furthermore, the heaviest consequence in committing piracy is imprisonment if you were caught recording without consent, permission, or authorization to replicate other people or professional's confidential work. As a result, people around you will become reluctant as they find out your deeds of doing piracy. Private agencies would contact those people who had done piracy or to track them through the information that was being gathered on the internet.

A lot of the world was seeking to gain control of trade networks, and targeting competition around the sea was a common practice. In the World of the Internet, the alternative cases of piracy increase year by year through the help of digital technology because this is due to all users having the privilege or power to steal someone’s work and technically own it. There is an effect of piracy in which most citizens of every country can lose their job in the cause of piracy and embezzled financial gain will have difficulty for the means to support their families. There’s a lot of examples of piracy , downloading a copyrighted song off the Internet is a good example of it. The disadvantages of privacy are the theft of personal information, spamming, and virus threats. When using the internet they can get information from many people. Even people may think that they are safe just because of privacy, don't be too dependent on it. Just be aware and be safe from any kind of threat.

Online piracy has a big impact on the Internet. Unauthorized reproduction, distribution or a copyrights is widespread in the internet and spreading stolen or filmed materials such as pirated movies, illegal software, only on cinema movies, music and entertainment. Because of it the companies, movie creators, music industry and other digital materials lose billions of income every year because of this piracy industry. Every rising industry has hindrance to its progress. So as the film industry's relationship with piracy, the rival of their dynasty. Piracy happens when a theft recorded one film being shown to cinemas and mass produced its copies to the public. This is a contrary to the wants of the film industries. Piracy is a great enemy to their productions as it is stealing their film without their consent, the thefts are earning money through this while the producers are having problems with the decrease of the sales they get from their film. Piracy is a great hindrance as its demand increases proportionally on how interesting and more awaiting a certain film is.

Having a pirated version of a film, is a threat to the rising progress of the film industry. Piracy however is a blessing to those who can't afford to buy themselves a ticket to watch the film, despite of the unclear visuals caused by the factors while recording the film many people are interested and is investing in piracy. Piracy is indeed illegal to any place in the world, this is related to stealing someone's property for their own benefits, but still it has more demands and is currently supplied every time a film is shown. There are certain penalties for those who committed piracy, but it is never enough to stop the piracy that is happening in our country. Despite those that are caught by the law,  there are still many out there, hungry for money, committing such risky crimes. Every light has darkness, it should maintain equilibrium. So as in the case of the film industry, there should always be piracy as long as it exists.

Piracy is stealing and stealing is against the law. Being against the law it has penalties if ever someone commits and gets caught. By pirating a movie or film you are committing copyright infringement for the reason that you have stolen something from the creator. One of the penalties is “Misdemeanor Conviction” having to serve a year imprisonment and a fine up to $100,000 or 4,833,600 PHP. Another penalty is “Felony Conviction” this is a more serious penalty than misdemeanor conviction having to serve 5 year imprisonment and $250,000 or 12,084,000 PHP. If the first time was not enough and you tend to commit it again because you have not learned your lesson having to stay in prison and paying a lot of money then you get “Repeat Offenders” where the fine could be the same but the imprisonment is doubled making yourself face 10 years imprisonment.
