RANT TIME!
Disclaimer: I’m only talking about Raoul from the 2004 version.
so, when I first watched Phantom Of The Opera (2004) I lwk was shitting on Raoul. Idk why but I had such a fucking hatred for this man specifically.
I haven’t hated a man MORE than Raoul. And now that I’ve watched it so many times, I still HATE Raoul, but…
If Christine ended up with anyone, it should’ve been Raoul. He was healthier for her, even though he’s a little dumb sometimes..
Q: Why do I hate Raoul?
A: certain things in the movie and musical specifically make it hard for me to fully like him. I do respect him, but his character makes me angry.
Examples of stuff Raoul has said/done that I hate for some reason:
“I fought so hard to free you”. NO YOU DIDN’T. Yes, you went down into a lair. Yes, you got yourself out of drowning…but you also fell asleep outside of her door when you said you’d protect her. You ALSO got caught in a noose after Madame Giry SPECIFICALLY told you to “keep your hand at the level of your eyes”.
His hair (2004 version specific. Raoul’s hair in the musical is MUCH better.)
As I said before:
YES I DO THINK RAOUL IS THE BETTER OPTION OUT OF THE TWO. He genuinely loved her and meant well, and I do give him credit for trying his best.
But, I think that, if the romance was out of the picture, Christine should’ve focused on herself and her career..
