Adventure Time RPG Review
The hypothetical taxes on these things are outrageous!
I have to say this is a well made game; being made using the 4th edition D&D rules makes the games combat fast and rewarding and the classes have been created in such a way that none seem to overshadow the others. And each have their role to fill and they fill them well. Warrior of course being an expy to the fighter is made to take damage and deal it out as well, thief I.E rogue sneakiest fool who is all about picking your pocket and stealing your purity, and finally the doctor who will patch up the fighter when a mimic starts eating that guys face and to buff and de-buff their allies in the midst of thrilling combat. There are about three more classes for an aspiring player to choose from.
Well that may not seem like a classes to choose from; it totally is. It also has a booming sixteen playable races to choose from each with their own unique skill and trait bonuses. That is double the race count in the 4th edition player handbook. Oh snap did that just blow your mind!?
Currently your character will max out at around five but the game has a bountiful selection of creatures and inhabitants of Ooh that will challenge your character. (And I'm sure with a little imagination players will be able to think of their own prestige classes, Roughhousing Marauder anyone?) Some creatures you will remember distinctly and others you might have to watch an episode or two to remember which just shows the attention of detail that the author put forward. Speaking of attention to detail the artwork for the game definitely reminds you that this is an Adventure Time inspired piece with the art style done right exactly right down to the noodley limbs!
Unfortunately their does not seem to much to select from in equipment. There is also a distinct lack of magic items and enchantments, which to me seems especially jarring since Adventure Time is typically portrayed overflowing with magic. Also with a lack of equipment to buy then money becomes quite useless and it becomes hard to entice adventures with a hook if loot is not something you can bait the hook with. These are minor complaints though because despite these things when I did a quick session with a few players that had more than enough fun spanking the hams of a few wayward goblin highwaymen.
Tips: use the online character creator it is a wonderful tool made to make your life easier.
P.S. Blood Ghost is making their own game by the name Young Blood a game about kids, aliens, and drama bombs...Not really that last one.
