Those first four Bathory albums cannot be touched. This one in particular really does it for me. Perfect blend of raw black metal and the newer Viking sound Quorthon was going for.

Bathory: Blodet och järnets återkomst

‘And the gods of the sky, Walked the face of the earth.’

Bathory. Ett mytomspunnet band, pionjärer för sin tid och ett inflytande som inte bör underskattas. Ett namn som borde nämnas lika ofta som Slayer och Metallica. Med en frontman som fram till sin död var paradoxalt jordnära och irriterad på just mytbildningen kring sitt band. Det verkligt fascinerande är att samme frontman - Qourthon (‘Ace’ Börje Forsberg) i flertalet intervjuer berättade hur bandet skrev och spelade in sin sjävbetitlade debut, helt utan vetskap om annan extremmetal. Idag anses det banbrytande, det satanistiska bild- och textspråket i kombination med den ‘dåliga’ produktionen saknade motstycke när det släpptes 1984.

I och med Blood Fire Death 1988 skulle den ökända geten överges nästan helt, istället började Qourthon utforska andra text- och ljudlandskap. Introt, “A fine Day to Die” och titelspåret blev föregångare till det som kommit att kallas Viking metal. Med det här inlägget börjar min text-serie om Bathorys album tillhörande den här genren, även om Qourthon troligen inte uppskattat kategoriseringen Jag har valt att hoppa över Destroyer of Worlds, då den känns allt för spretig. Samma argument skulle faktiskt kunna appliceras på Blood Fire Death, skillnaden är att det sistnämnda har ett historiskt värde. Därför ska följande album avhandlas:

Blood Fire Death, Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods, Blood on Ice och Nordland I & II
