Bathory - Blood on Ice

Efter Twilight of the Gods, rörde sig Bathory mot ett mer thrash-dominerat musiklandskap med albumen Requiem och Octagon, för att återvända till viking metal i och med Blood on Ice 1996. Blood on Ice hade spelats in redan 1988-1989, för att läggas på hyllan (eller kanske i frysen?). Enligt Qourthon själv omarbetade han ungefär 40% av materialet 1995. Med det i åtanke är det mycket naturligt att konceptalbumet Blood on Ice låter som det gör.  

Blood on Ice handlar om en man som tvingas fly sin by när den attackeras av en tvåhövdad ond best och dens hantlangare. Vinden bär med sig jakten på hämnd och sagan om blod på is. Så börjar detta äventyr av superhjälte-proportioner och som vanligt har det varit ett misstag att detaljstudera Bathorys texter. Egentligen gör det inget att texterna är som dem är, det är nämligen ovanligt svårt att urskilja vad som sjungs, som en följd av produktionen, vilken i min mening är den svagaste bland Bathorys vikinga-album. Produktionen låter ofta för dovt och grötigt. På de snabbare låtarna saknas ofta det brutala och intensiva från låtar som “For All Those Who Died”. På de långsammare låtarna saknas ofta tyngden och stämningen från låtar som “Blood and Iron” eller “Shores in Flames”, bland dessa hittar vi dock några av Blood on Ice höjdpunkter. “Man of Iron” är en fin enkel akustisk låt och “The Woodwoman” samt “The Lake” hade utan problem kunnat platsa på Twilight of the Gods.

Med tanke på att det gick fyra år från att Qourthon släppte ett album (med sitt soloprojekt eller Bathory) till att Blood on Ice fick sin uppföljare i Destroyer of Worlds, är det svårt att förstå varför han inte la mer tid på just Blood on Ice. Albumet är definitivt bra, men håller inte alls lika bra i 55 minuter som sina två vikinga-föregångare, både produktionen och låtkvaliten är frustrerande ojämn. Här finns massa potential som av någon outgrundlig anledning hafsats bort, kvar är ett par solida låtar på ett album jag ytterst sällan vill höra.
