They reformed for a one-off concert to support Teenage Cancer Trust on the 24th March, 2010, and as the three year anniversary edges ever closer, Suede have finally released a first glance at their upcoming album – their first new material in over a decade.
The record, entitled ‘Bloodsports,’ is the follow-up to 2002′s commercial flop, ‘A New Morning.’ “Barriers” is the first track to feature from the release; you can listen to it below, and download it for free here.
There’s no denying that the pressure’s been at an all-time-high for one of Britpop’s finest, but this track quickly restores any faith that might have wavered. There’s a driving drumbeat, distorted guitars, and a chorus with enough hooks to ensure that by the songs end you already know the words.
It sounds, oddly enough, like Suede. Not as heavy as the songs on ‘Dog Man Star,’ but not as poppy as the tracks on ‘Coming Up’ either, “Barriers” sits neatly between the two styles; a return to top form. This isn’t the sound of a group trying to relive past glories – it’s the sound of a band rediscovering who they used to be, and celebrating it.
‘Bloodsports’ is set for release later in the year. The first single from the record, “It Starts & Ends With You,” will see release next month. Suede will play a one-off show at London’s Alexandra Palace on the 30th March – tickets are on sale now.
