Since visiting Monk’s House and Charleston in April, I have been on a mission to read as much as I can about Virginia Woolf’s life. I had already read almost all of her novels but now after reading so much about her personal life, I have become even more fascinated by her than I have ever been. Watching the Royal Wedding 🇬🇧 yesterday of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, I found myself reminiscing about the time last month when I visited the Berwick Church in Sussex. This lovely, little church has murals covering the nave walls, chancel arch, screen and pulpit which were all painted during the Second World War by the Bloomsbury artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell. Just like the traditional Royal Family took a chance on incorporating African-American culture into yesterday’s wedding, back in 1941 the Berwick Church Council and also the Chancellor of the Diocese took a chance on having these unconventional artists paint this traditional church. It was a great experiment and a catalyst for promoting the relationship between the Arts and the Church. I have always believed that great things happen when people are open-minded, positive and take chances. ❤️ If you ever visit Charleston or Monk’s House, you must promise me you will also stop by this artsy church. Here I stand in the doorway to Virginia Woolf’s writing lodge. (Scroll left to see her desk and view). It is located at the far end of the garden under a giant chestnut tree. In 1934, after fifteen years of living at Monk’s House they finally had enough funds to build a proper space for Virginia to retreat to. The Years and also Between the Acts were written here along with essays, reviews, diary entries and many letters. On Friday March 28, 1941, on a cold spring morning, this is where she wrote her final two letters. These farewell letters were to her husband, Leonard and the other to her sister, Vanessa, before walking down to the River Ouse with stones in her pockets and ending her life. While I stood in this intimate space where she inhabited day after day to work on her craft, I felt as though I was in a trance while staring at her desk, at all of her belongings and out the large window that she would look out of while she wrote. Hanging out in Virginia Woolf’s bedroom was one of the best day of my literary life! Exactly two weeks ago I experienced the most intense and in depth #WoolfWednesday. I went to visit Monk’s House in East Essex for the first time. In 1919 for just £700, Virginia and Leonard purchased this picturesque cottage as their country home. They loved it so much that it eventually became their permanent home. Touring the house, writing lodge and garden, where Virginia’s ashes are buried (see photo here of bronze bust), I swear I could feel her presence. It was so easy to imagine her living in this intimate space especially since it was decorated with furniture and art painted by her sister, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and of course there were books in every room. Did you know that if the weather was bad or she wasn’t feeling well she would often write from her bed? This bed, pictured behind me! If you slide to the next photo, you will see the slim bookshelf in her bedroom which holds 39 of her personal Arden editions of Shakespeare. They were all hand-covered by Virginia herself. The Chinese embroidered shall which is draped on her armchair was a gift from her friend, Lady Ottoline Morrell. It took everything in me to resist picking up her beautiful shall and wrapping it around me! Okay, I admit it, I am completely enamoured, maybe slightly obsessed, by this literary icon! Born this day (January 25th), 1882: Virginia Woolf. Woolf was an important modernist author, member of the Bloomsbury Set, pioneer of the stream of consciousness narrative device, and remains a significant figure in feminist/female literature to this day. She may not have written classic, gothic novels, but there's a certain gothic quality to her stories... those that she told, and that which she lived. For this, Virginia Woolf forever has a place in the Generally Gothic club. To celebrate, 'Woolf at Sea' (H. S. Emadian, 2016), a poem addressed to Woolf, has been shared on the main site.
