Born this day 1907, Daphne Du Maurier (d. 1989) is considered both a romantic novelist (much to her chagrin) and a sensationalist. She was right to be displeased; her stories unravel with dark and haunting mystery, and are a far cry from tedious, linear romance. In it's original form, Du Maurier's 1951 novel, 'My Cousin Rachel', is an intriguing and thought-provoking thriller. First adapted for the screen only a year after the novel was released, director Henry Koster stripped the narrative of substance and atmosphere in 1952. The film's trailer questions, with classic cinematic extravagance: "Was she a woman or witch, Madonna or a muderess?" The eponymous protagonist, most recently portrayed by the captivating Rachel Weisz (dir. Roger Michell, 2017), is the subject of this enquiry. As she stands accused by the very man drinking her dubious teas, Du Maurier, of course, does not clarify which Rachel is. Whether witch or not, she certainly is a strong, independent, and beguiling woman... which as we by now know, was enough to attract accusations of witchcraft. 📸: 'My Cousin Rachel' film still, dir. Kurosawa y su tiempo

Hace 108 años nació Akira Kurosawa,el japonés cuyo cine concentró un humanismo heroico ligado a valores occidentales. Muchas de las cintas de Kurosawa se concentran en hombres que frenan sus deseos egoístas y trabajan por el bien común. Visión moral, sin duda.

Así, el héroe de Kurosawa, en principio egoísta y testarudo. aprende la disciplina y el sacrificio de un sabio maestro mayor. Si bien los conceptos de humanidad en el cine de Kurosawa son universales, son un tanto anacrónicos en su contexto: los agitados años 60'.

Es decir, Kurosawa parece pasado de moda, cuando se nota q otros directores japoneses estaban haciendo obras innovadoras (Ozu, Oshima etc).

El cine de Kurosawa destaca por su frenética y enérgica edición: audaces cortes a detalle, los no cambios de ángulo, los incesantes paneos.

De Kurosawa también sus rígidas composiciones, sus primeras obras naturalistas que son hoy, estilizadas puestas en escena.

Today, 108 years ago, the japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa was born. His films concentrated on heroic humanism linked to Western values. Many of Kurosawa's movies focus on men who hold back their selfish desires and work for the common good. Moral vision, no doubt.

 So, the hero of Kurosawa, in the beginning selfish and stubborn, learned discipline and sacrifice of an older wise master. While the concepts of humanity in the Kurosawa films are universal, they are somewhat anachronistic in their context: the turbulent 60′.

 That is, Kurosawa seems passé, when you notice that other Japanese directors were doing innovative work (Ozu, Oshima etc). Kurosawa film stand out for their frenetic and energetic editing: bold cuts to detailed, non-angle changes, and incessant panning. 

 Kurosawa cinema also has rigid compositions, his first naturalistic works are transformed over the years into stylized stagings.

Born this day, 1804: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dark Romantic & occasional Gothic author. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne is relation to the only witch trial judge who did not later repent for his actions. The influence of his ancestry is apparent in his writing, which often explores themes of historical sin & guilt. 'The Scarlett Letter' (1850), for example, focuses upon the very public punishment of his Protagonist, for the perceived sin of parenting a child out of wedlock. As a result of the situations he wrote her into, and the way in which she responded, Hester (of 'The Scarlett Letter') is heralded as a profeminist character by many literary critics. I keep my "special" dirt, sand, & water in two places. My altar and my apothecary shelves. Except for this little beauty. This charming effigy of William Faulkner, which houses dirt from his grave, was lovingly sculpted by @thealchemistswitch a few years ago and to say I cherish it would be an understatement. I adore it so much that it sits at the very top center of my worktable where I can see it everyday. I talk to it so often that I'm waiting for it to start talking back 😶😮😂
