At the best and even unexpurgated, diaries give a distorted or one-sided portrait of the writer, because, as Virginia Woolf herself remarks somewhere in these diaries, one gets into the habit of recording one particular kind of mood — irritation or misery, say — and of not writing one’s diary when one is feeling the opposite. The portrait is therefore from the start unbalanced, and, if someone then deliberately removes another characteristic, it may well become a mere caricature.

i’m reading about virginia woolf and there’s this diary passage of hers when she had just turned 33 and she’s talking about her hopes and they are as follows: -to buy a home on hogarth -to buy a printing press -to get a bulldog, “probably called john.” in other words, virginia woolf and i have the same goals! weird.

is so cool. currently dreaming up a paper in which i examine how this one woman is treated as a “manic pixie dream girl” even though she’s probably in her late 40s. what archetype does that leave us? what happens to the comfortably wealthy (but not so wealthy as to have power), idealized, over-sexed, spineless, misogynistic, pretty young woman when she’s aged?

(and, what can exploring this tell us about both woolfs opinions on society AND our own conceptions of aging women who still remain extremely feminine and complacent within the hetero-patriarchy?)

I got a great a gift in the mail today for going to grad school. It is a second American edition of A Room of One’s Own, by Virginia Woolf. This book was my inspiration to get my MLIS degree and become an LIS professional. Also, the little butter dish is a gift from a great friend of mine.
