Last week BloomV and I were yapping as usual and came up with the idea of Valtor being spelled to only speak in Gen-Z slang and I can’t get it out of my head.
Valtor: chat, how do we feel about this plan to take over Cloud Tower?
i haven't posted any writing in a while, so enjoy this snippet from yet another incomplete fic
“He helped me save you and you won’t even speak to him!” I shouted. “Is that how Sparx shows its gratitude to those who aid it? By banishing them?”
Oritel’s eyes narrowed, dripping with barely restrained fury. “That monster should be thankful that is all I do to him,” he said. “My decision is final. The traitor Baltor has until sunrise to flee the realm. If he fails to comply with this order, I will not hesitate to execute him myself for crimes against the crown.”
Stella blanched beside me. “Your Highness, sunrise is only an hour away.”
His gaze darkened. “Then I suggest he moves quickly.”
The throne room erupted in cheers.
Stella was upon us in a flash, muttering back and forth with Sky about potential refuge locations that might offer Baltor clemency. But their voices were distant, dying inside the deafening roar blaring in my ears. The endless cacophony of nothingness that echoed through my body, swallowing it whole, under my birth father’s smug glare.
I couldn’t tear myself away from his unwavering eyes. Dark eyes that demanded I submit to his ruling. Warning me not to test his authority again in front of his court.
And he was right.
I wasn’t raised on Sparx. It would take years before I could properly keep up with the rollercoaster that was the Magic Dimension’s political climate.
However, at that moment, I didn’t give a damn about Sparxian politics. I didn’t care about decorum or rank or allies. I cared about wiping the damned smirk off my birth father’s face. I wanted to hurt him. To make him feel the same pain and betrayal I did.
You hold the ace, Bloom. Once you realize that, you’ll understand no one can ever force you to do anything. Not even your birth parents. You are the Guardian of the Dragon Flame and the Princess of Sparx. This realm submits to your rule. Not theirs.
Growing up, Mike always told me: If the bullies punched first, punch back harder.
And Baltor was right. I had a gnarly right hook.
A firm hand latched onto my shoulder, pulling me back the several steps I hadn’t realized I’d already taken. Looking behind me, I saw Sky staring at me. His blue eyes wide and desperate. Warning. Begging. “Bloom, don’t.”
The first ache of many hit me then. No longer was I looking at the King of Eraklyon. I only saw Sky. My Sky. The boy who had saved Stella and I from that troll back on Earth all those years ago. The Sky who rushed headfirst into the hellish, icy ruins of Sparx to make sure I was safe when I was without my powers. The same one who had fought so hard to save me from the depths of Darkar's clutches. And here he was again, trying to save me from the one person he knew he could never protect me from.
But just as he had with Darkar, he would fail again. I needed him to fail again.
Pushing down the reluctance creeping into my limbs, I pried his hand off my shoulder. But before he could pull it back, I laced my fingers with his and squeezed. I squeezed with every ounce of strength I could muster, tears pricking my eyes, hoping --praying-- it would be enough. Because he had to know. I couldn’t walk away without him knowing.
Sky froze, his eyes shooting to our entwined hands. He stared at them for what seemed like years, a war raging in his mind separate from the one beginning around us. I was asking him to go against his nature. It was wrong of me to ask it of him, but I had to nonetheless.
Then finally I felt him squeeze back.
Relief washed through me so strong I feared my legs would fail me. But it didn’t stop the second wave of anguish that struck me when his hand slipped out of mine.
“Bloom, what’s going on?” Stella’s voice pierced through the noise. “Sky?”
A flurry of questions poured out of her, but I ignored them all. They would all be answered soon enough.
As I approached the platform, I let myself take in the grand throne room I’d once only witnessed in dreams. The golden statues, the jade pool, the mural of the Great Dragon etched into the domed ceiling. All sights I’d longed to see for myself in reality and not through Baltor’s memories.
I hoped to see them again one day.
“If your decision is final, then so is mine.”
Reaching for my belt, my fingers brushed against the gold filigree of my birth medallion. I could still remember the day when the fake Avalon presented it to me sophomore year. When I refused to let it out of my sight. Refused to take it off even. Before it, I only had words and stories about my birthright. It was the only physical reminder that I truly was the Princess of Sparx. The planet’s only living princess.
For once, I supposed that title might actually benefit me.
Stella gasped behind me as I ripped my medallion free and dropped it at my feet. The crowd of pompous royals went silent beneath the damning clank of the metal hitting the marble floor. A death knell.
When it takes less than 5 minutes for somebody to break down on the podcast, you know it’s gonna be a good episode. Enjoy this sneak peek of the audio while we keep editing the full version, out later this week.
me to @bloomvalyria after she sent me the second chapter of paranoid and petrified for beta-ing and had to give me the big twist everyone's guessing because I kept guessing it wrong:
Don't want to go to real school? Come to FAKE school on the Sparxshipping Discord!
I think it’s pretty official at this point that tomorrow (3/1) at 12PM PST, @bloomvalyria and I are giving a super legit powerpoint on the history of the sparxshipping fandom because we've been in it for like 15 years and it’s time to pass the war stories down. Learn about the fics, the namesake, the tropes, and ask any questions you have! Yes, this is the same discord where the S3 watch parties were happening! Come hang out if you’ve got the time!
Tis the season to be cancelled! After fighting with OBS and Discord @bloomvalyria and I have finally gotten a halfway decent setup to stream when not in the same room. So this Sunday, join us as we rank unpopular fandom tropes/opinions/whatever in a livestream that is not to be taken seriously at all. Join us if you've got the time!
Programming Note: We will again be live on @bloomvalyria ‘s tumblr account. If you already follow her, you’ll get a notification when we go live.
